Show Braves Wins In Close Contest Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1981 20 GAMES By KARL STRANGFELD MVflW CORRESPOND! NT BOUNTIFUL It was cold and miserable In the valley Thursday night as the Braves handed East their sixth defeat. But the score doesnt tell the story of how hard it was for Bountiful to get the 144 yrads it needed to win. Bountiful Coach Paul Waite said the Lepords were the best 2 and 5 team his Braves had played. They were though both mentaly and physically, and they never stopped coming at us. They really wanted this game. It was a very tough game and, as the braves found out early, the pigskin can be a very illusive item to hang on to when its cold and wet. On the Braves first scoring threat the drive was stopped on the 6 yard line when the ball tumbled into the endzone without the customary runner behind it and the Lepords, who gave nothing away, recovered it for a touch-bac- IN 18-- 6 If ,! MKX JUMf i This Friday will be the last day of games for regular season play in both regions. The following is a list of games which have possibilities of moving things around a bit prior to the playoffs: BOUNTIFUL VS DAVIS Coach Waite has led his Braves to an impressive record in Region four play. The Braves have used a determined offense and have not been a team to put many points on the scoreboard. But a win is all that is needed. Friday they play a defensively strong Davis team which lost only one region game against Highland. The game was close and Davis always had a chance to take the game. Davis already has a spot in post season play but a win against the Braves would be a mental lift. If Davis is able to win they would tie the Braves for first place. But if Bountiful is able to keep its winning colume unscathed then they move into the playoffs with enough momentum to beat any team. 0 ROY VS SKY VIEW Roy has claimed all year that they deserve the number one position in Region one, and this Friday they have the chance to prove it. The Royals sit with Sky View in second place, and have a chance to clinch the spot with a win. Roy has a great post season play record SOLD NA TIONALLY FOR $24.99 MIKE GEE waits Eggett, who rolled over on the ball. The hard fought game ended with the Braves completing only 3 of 14 passes attemped, but the ones that counted for something were caught. Eggett once again put on a show as he totaled 87 yards on 20 carries and Smith carried for 36 in 11 runs, quite a feat considering the defensive battle that was going on. The game was a lot closer than the score indicated but the Braves were able to take advantage of some big East errors and proved themselves winners once again. and any coach would rather meet someone else. But Sky View, which came off a close 4 loss to Bonneville, may not be in a soft mood. They could use their lessons from last weeks game and stemroll over the Royals. 16-1- LAYTON VS CLEARFIELD The battle for last spot is never enjoyable but it can be as vicious as a fight for the number one position. No one wants to be the regions door mat, but someone has to be. That decision will be made Friday as the Luckless Layton Lancers meet the Cold Clearfield Falcons in a war of the worst. Layton is trying to hide a 4 region record and an embarrassing 8 overall. Clearfield is also at 4 for the region but touts one win and only seven loses. The records for both of the schools has many coaches, as well as fans, scratching their heads. Whatever the reason, the battle will be for pride, something which runs deep in both schools. 0-- 0-- 0-- BONNEVILLE VS WEBER This game shouldnt be to much of a concern g for the Lakers, unless they cant An upset is always a to the a ride game. get possibility but so is snow in July. high-rollin- NEW GRAND PIANO have recently just acquired numerous organs and pianos from the Wurlitzer Co. who have closed one of their regional factories. Late in the quarter Alan, Schwab blocked a punt attempted by the Lepords and Craig Holmes recovered it in the endzone for the Braves first score of the game. Bountifuls Dave Wilson later intercepted an East pass to set up the Braves second score as Todd Smith went over the middle to put 6 more on the board. The highlight of the defense game came with only 30 seconds left to play in the second quarter. The Braves held the Lepords on the one yard line for four downs. It seemed to have turned the tide for Bountiful and they came out fighting in the second half. But so did the Lepords. The two teams battled back and forth until late in the third quarter when a good punt return by the speicality team gave the Braves good field position on the 50. On the next play quarterback Philip Sclmutz stepped back and threw a pass for 40 yards to Todd Smith who took it the rest of the way into the endzone, making the score 18 to 0. But the Lepords were not to be shutout. The Lepords finally threw their way for 6 points, but the conversion was once again stopped by the Braves defense. The ensuing onsides kick attempt was foiled as the ball bounced into the sure hands of Rob 3Q American Cancer Society i. W. Paint SHOP ond Glass Gompony BOTH STORES |
