Choose pets, computers as presents carefully You have saved up some money and want to bring home something special for the holidays this year. You can't wait to see the look on your children's faces when an adorable puppy with a big bow around its neck runs out to greet them as they open their gifts. Or perhaps technology has finally surpassed your computer and you've decided to surprise your family with a new one. Although these gifts are likely to lift your familys spirits, keep in mind that both are long-tercommitments. So choose carefully. If your holiday shopping list includes a pet or a new computer, here are some things to do before you buy; m Do research and shop around. Avoid shopping for these important purchases. Select a pet that will fit last-minu- te best into your household because, in essence, you are welcoming a new family member into your home. Your decision should be based on the prospective pets behavior, activity level, training needs, food and hous- ing requirements, and general disposition. When shopping for a computer, remember that it's much like buying a car. There are many to choose from. The first thing to do is decide what minimum requirements your computer will need. Then do research for the best system you can get within your budget. Always buy a computer from a reputable electronics dealer. Consider future costs. Both pets and computers will incur additional expenses for your family. A pet will need routine veterinary care, food and other provisions which can become expensive. Be sure the recipients of your gift are prepared to provide for a pet throughout its lifetime, typically eight to 15 years or more. A computer will likely need periodic upgrades and maintenance. Also consider the cost of new software and accessories. Know your recipients lifestyle. In bringing home a pet, take into account what kinds of pets your family members like, any allergies they may have, and if they have time and money to take on the added responsibility. For a computer, consider the recipients needs. Will it be used to surf the Internet, to send for word processing, for graphics or for playing games? Would they prefer a desktop or a laptop? Know this information before you shop. (NUE) Shop wisely during the holiday season The holiday shopping season is here. Whether you plan to shop by telephone, catalog, in traditional retail stores or online, it pays to be a savvy consumer. The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to help you shop wisely during the holiday season. Shop Wisely When shopping by catalog, telephone or online, be sure you have an address and phone number to contact if you have questions or problems. If you are not familiar with the merchant, check the company out with your Better Business Bureau. Provide personal information only if you know who is collecting it, why and how it is going to be used. When online, look for the companys privacy policy, or ask the customer service representative w hen on the phone. Pay the safest way. A credit card offers the most consumer protections. Know Your Rights Check out a companys refund and exchange policy before you buy. Verify delivery dates. When you place an order, the company usually tells you when the merchandise can be delivered. Under the law, a company must ship your order within the time stated and no more than 30 days after the order date. Read the fine print. When shopping online, sometimes the key restrictions on a sale are contained in the fine print on a web site. Take some time to click oi hyperlinks leading to warranty or rebate information, additional costs or other key information you should know about before you buy online. Look for the Best Deals Compare prices. Look for PUBLIC NOTICE The EMERY COUNTY PROGRESS makes every effort to avoid errors.
