Show Did You Know... ARIZONA Apache Trail National Forest Scenic Byway (SR 88) began as an aboriginal path- way through the Superstition Mountains before becoming a horse trail in the late 1800s. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation built the present road to ease the hauling of supplies for the construction of Roosevelt Dam. A portion was designated a National Forest Scenic Byway in 1998. 38-mi- le CALIFORNIA Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego takes its name from Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sailed into San Diego Bay on Sept. 28, 1542. A statue on an overlook commemorates the event. The Golden Gate Bridge, completed in 1937, was once considered impossible to build due to high winds and strong ocean currents. UTAH Willard Bay State Park at Willard (pop. 1,630) is popular for year-roucrappie, walleye, and catfish angling. The Wilderness in the Gty covers more than 4,700 acres where the Willamette River flows into the Columbia.
