The SRJH girls played some tough defense to hold off the Pirates. Rut late in the third quarter the Pirates came alive and the score was SRJH 26 and MH.JH 23 with 3:16 left in the quarter. SRJH put in two foul shots to bring their total to 28. San Rafaels Alexis Sw asey fouled a Pirate which brought them to the line for two foul shots which they made bringing By PATSY STODDARD 25-1- 6 Staff, Emery County Progress The boys and girls basketball teams from Emery and Carbon counties battled it out at San Rafael Junior High in Perron on Peb. 20 and 21. In the first game the San Rafael girls defeated the Canyon Mew The next girls by a score of had View the game Canyon boys pitted against the Mont Harmon pirates. The Canyon View team led at The the half by a score of 45-2- 7. them to within one point of the Bulldogs. On the other end of the court Swasey w;as fouled and sank two foul shots to bring the 22-1- 4. second half was a fast paced game with a lot of players getting in foul trouble. The game ended with CVJH 64 and Mont Harmon 53. The next matchup was the Helper girls against the Mont Harmon girls this battle ended with Mont Harmon defeating the Helper team. The boys from San Rafael and the Helper Rams were next out on the floor and their contest ended with the Rams on top. The championship girls game w as played at 5 p.m. on Thursday with Mont Harmon and San Rafael going head to head. The score was score to SRJH 30, Mont Harmon 27 with 1:30 left to play in the third. On their next possession Mont Harmon turned over the ball on a traveling violation. Two quick fouls on San Rafael players Swasey and Callie Seely put Mont Harmon at the line. But the free shots went astray. Mont Harmon had a reaching foul which brought Adrian McNee to the line. She missed her foul shot and the ensuing scuffle for the ball brought a jump ball call. San Rafael 9 OuQuQ came up with the ball but stepp'd on the line giving the ball back to Mont Harmon. The San Rafael girls kept full court pressure on the team from Price which led to much frustration on their part. McNee fouled a Pirate but they couldnt make their free shot and the score stood at SRJH 30, Mont Harmon 27 at the end of the third quarter. Into the fourth quarter the play w'as just as intense with McNee going to the line for tw'o foul shots. Her attempts failed and the ball returned to the Mont Harmon side of the court, but not for longas the ball was stolen aw ay by Natalee Hanson and brought back down the court. Talma Merrill of SRJH got in on the fouling which brought a Pirate to the line. She stepped over the free throw line however and the ball returned to San Rafael possession. A traveling violation sent the ball back to Mont Harmon w ho in turn tra eled with it. The ball was stolen from SRJH and taken down court by the Pirate but it would not drop. San Rafael attempted a three that w'ould not drop. Tought play continued but at the sound of the buzzerSan Rafael was still on top with a score of 37-3The SRJH girls were presented with two trophies, one for the championship and one for tying for first in league play. 0. Canyon View boys beat Helper for championship By PATSY STODDARD Staff, Emery County Progress The Canyon View Junior High Cougars met the Helper Rams for the championship of the Castle Valley Athletic Association's Basketball tournament on Thursday at San Rafael Junior High. Canyon View was first to jump out and score eight unanswered points. Bodie Marshall of CVJH put in two more points before Helper scored two. Helper came to life and added four more points and the score stood at CVJH 10 and HJH 6 with 2: 1 5 left in the first quarter. CVJH added four more points to lead 14 to 6 with 1:36 left in the first quarter. Brad Sitterud hit a jumper to add two points to the CV tally and at the end of the first quarter CV lead 18-1- 0. The second quarter began with a quick three by Sitterud and Marshall added tw o more to his total. With 6:40 left in the second quarter CV was up Marshall put in two more points and was fouled in 25-1- 0. the effort, but could not add the extra point. Marshall with the hot hand quickly dropped two more in with a jump shot. Helper added a few points of their own but left for the half time break down 40-2CV came out of the half smoking with Marshall, Joey Bernard, Bruce Clement and Daniel Espino all addingquiek baskets. The score stood at 54- 4. 38 with 2:43 left in the third quarter. Da id Justice came alive at the end of the third quarter adding two, then three and then two more in rapid succession and at the end of the third quarter CV led 61-4- 2. Marshall began the fourth quarter with a quick two and was fouled in the process but could not convert on the free shot. CV led with 6:36 to go Marshall again swished a two and then a three to boost the CV total to 4 with 4:54 to go in the fourth. Clement added two and Justice added two. Justice 63-4- 8. 68-5- was fouled and converted on one of the two free shots. CV did a bit of fouling on the Helper end of the court as Marshall and Justice each picked up fouls. Kevin Dull got into the defensive effort as he rejected a Helper shooter. On CVs trip down the court they lost the ball out of bounds and the score stood at 8 with 2:45 76-5- left in the fourth. Clement added two points to the CV score. Espino came dow n the court and was fouled. He went to the line and put in one of the two free shots. The score stood at Justice ended the scoringefforts for the Cougars by adding two baskets at the end of the game. Helper attempted a throe at the buzzer but was denied and the score stood at The Cougars were presented with two trophies. One was for winning league play and the other was the tournament trophy. 76-6- 0. 83-6- 2. Bruce Clement, Oshai Davis and Joey Bernard fight for the ball.
