Show MAY 18, 1983 JS mpm Vta dai?,. $. -- 0 tZID Falcons Capture Fourth Track Title In A Row CLEARFIELD - Perhaps for John Flint at least, his fourth consecutive Region One track and field title was without doubt the most special. ir sprint relay teams performance, making up somewhat for his fourth in both the 100 and 200 meters. It was straightening out our handoffs that got us the title, said Foulger. Other members of the champion relay included Ricky Smith, Jared Martin and Robert Sherwood. 400-met- YOU MIGHT ask why. It has been this season that has been the most frustrating. Injuries ran rampant, cold weather screwed everything up and the kids themselves were challenged to the max with outside things that Flint never stopped worrying about. But last Saturday at Weber State College, Flint and his Falcon brigade made salt taste sweet as they swept the 1983 region title against one of the strongest fields in years. IT WAS the Flints fifth region title in nine years of leading Clearfield track and field and his fourth in a row. As one head track coach from the region relayed, The guy (Flint) works harder than anyone I know. He deserves everything he gets. Clearfield totalled some 125 points, enough to stay ahead of Weber and Sky View who tied for second with 101. Layton was fourth with 90, Bonneville fifth with 60 and Roy rounded things out with 47. CHICK HISLOP, who coaches the Weber State track team, commented, Flints got a Boston Celtics dynasty of track and field going. You have to admire the guy for what hes done. Things didnt start out to well for Clearfield on opening day, just another thing to add to the frustration this team has gone through this year. J.C. VonCollin, the defending state AFTER NINE events, Clearfield pulled ahead for good, That was a combination of the Falcons winning the sprint relay and Sky View getting DQed in that event. A few days before the region meet, Coach Flint stated it would have to be guys like Sherwood and Dean Garrett coming through in the hurdles in order for a fourth title to come their way. Garrett did his job in finishing fourth in the highs and second to Roys Larry Helms in the 300 IMs. Garretts best part of his 300 IM was the first four hurdles where he had the early lead. 73-6- 8. CLEARFIELDS No. high jumper, junior Hal Schofield, finished third in the region in the He tied for second but had high jump at more misses than Laytons Jerry Cooper. Clearfield obtained some strength from senior Bill Wilcox in the distance races as he claimed fifth in the 3200 meters and fifth again in the 1600 meters. 1 6-- 6. Layton Track Great Efforts Fowtb Fhee LAYTON - Even though Russ Jones was expecting a little more team wise last weekend at the Region One track and field championships, he couldnt fault some superb individual performances. night and started dreaming about the next day. All I could think about was getting off the blocks fast enough and stay ahead of everyone. I knew Id beaten everyone before so my confidence going into the second day was where it should have been all along. About the only thing Johnson couldn't be happy about and something that sorely disappointed Jones, was the handoff foul-u- p in the spring relay. Layton was in second place going into the final handoff, but a miscommunication between Tom Kidd and Tony Walters denied any kind of finish. -- AS VONCOLLIN dominated first place in the shot, both Kim Thurgood and Corey Walker dominated the depth chart. Thurgood took third and Walker was sixth. Our backbone event is the 400 meters," said Flint. It was Bubba Conley finishing second there, Dirk Barlow taking fourth and Ricky Smith grabbling fifth. After that kind of finish, the Falcons began padding their lead over Sky View and Weber. in the discus, scratched three times to lose his title there. J.C. did straight however come back the second day to win the shot put with his best ever throw of champion 56-4'- 2. VONCOLLIN COMMENTED, I was disappointed because I put too much pressure on myself to break records. This week at state will be much different, because Im not worrying about records. Two things that put hope back into the veins of the Clearfieldites, was Gary Breitwisers unexpected third place in the discus and the pole vaulters dominance in their event. Clearfield's Robbie Sherwood came back from injuries and general frustration to place high in the Region One hurdles and qualify for state. BARLOW came back moments later to take second in the 800 meters while junior Glen Coy took sixth. Clearfields mile relay team went second in the region while the medley could do no better than fourth. LANE FISHBURN, the defending pole vault champion said, I have to give James Moore all the credit in the world. He deserved to be the champion for all the hard work he put in. As . far as state next week, its now or never. Its time to pull it out. Moore went 12-- 9 as Fishburn did, but did it on fewer misses. The junior jumper was composed in saying, It surprised me, because I havent been jumping that well lately. Moore is looking forward to next year where a lqt of hard work might pay greater dividends. ANOTHER REGION day hero was senior Robbie Sherwood who was ahead in the high hurdle race until the last moments and settled for third and a qualification for the state meet. Sherwood also anchored the winning 400 meter relay team. There is a point where taking second and being injured can go so far. I just gutted it up and said it was enough and Im pleased with the results," he said. Dean Garrett finished fourth in the hurdles to also aid the team's cause. Senior Dean Foulger was ciaieu about the IF I HAD one word to describe the team, itd have to be character. We had so many obstacles in injuries, problems in school and not once did any of them stop battling back. It was our philosophy that did it again, that of winning it was an entire team. ITS HARD to find words I guess, its pretty emotional. I have a lot of respect for these guys and I hope they know that by now. "The awards are nice, but the greatest thing for me is to see the kids come out and achieve something theyll always be proud of, said Flint. DICK MICHALS, who assists Flint in track commented, Maybe this one is the most special, perhaps because it was the first time weve won it away from Clearfield. In three years with Coach Flint, I've never worked with a coach that was so good with kids and so knowledgeable about the sport. Nobody can keep up with him. He deserves everything that comes to him. I'LL PROBABLY never meet a harder YOU COULD start with Phil Johnson, who came out for track the very first time in his life, and ended up finishing second in the 100 meters and third in the 200 meters. Then its on to the marvelous Myron Cooper who touched just about everyone with his run to beat heartstopping Bubba Conley and Clearfield for the mile relay championship. This kid was also brilliant in the 400 and 800 meters where he took home two more first place medals. DONT stop there. You could talk about Dave Brimhalls sudden emergence in the shot put, the strength of the medley relay champions, Jerry Coopers strength in the jiigh jump and the efforts of Tom Kidd and Jim Norton in long jumping and hurdles. Jones comments about Johnson were sorta reminiscent of the rest of the team. The kid has worked since January 3rd in track and hasnt thought about anything but track. Hes been working his tail (iff and he deserved at least second in the 100. MYRON COOPER just keeps getting strone ace was ger and stronger. The a crowd pleaser in the mile relay where he started out nearly 15 to 20 yards behind Clearfields Bubba Conley, but still managed to catch him and take the Lancers to victory in that relay. was alsb' & terror1 ih thd'400 meters "''Cooper' where he beat Conley for the first time Saturday. Later he came back to beat Webers Kevin Anderson in the 800 meters as the two staged quite a dual race to the very end. middle-distanc- I FINALLY got on top, said Myron, who finished second to his brother Mike in both the 400 and 800 last year in the region finals. Cooper had the only 400 meter clocking under 50 seconds as he ran that race with a time of 49.75. PHIL HIMSELF commented, My trials performance was shoddy. I went home that TOM KIDD grabbed some key points for the in both the long jump where he finished third (20-9- ) and fourth in the 300 IM hurdles. Maybe messing up in the 400 meter relay got me down in the hurdle race. The John Flint leads Lancers Clearfield Falcons to unmatched fourth consecutive Region One Track and Field Title bright spot the first day was the long jump where I beat (Jim) Norton," said Kidd. Norton was fourth in the long jump for Layton and came back the second day to take fifth in the high hurdles and sixth in the 300 IM hurdles. LAYTON HAD to be proud of the effort of senior Jerry Cooper in the high jump where he soared 6 and took second place behind the talented Cory Swenson of Weber. Cooper scratched all three times in the javelin and had a throw of 180 feet wiped out when he scratched by a whisker. Ronnie Pearce did take sixth in the javelin. Laytons medley relay team of Chuck Hanor, Dave Kirkham, Tony Walters and Trevor Figgins blew by the rest of the field for top honors in the medley relay. Figgins stated, I heard (Bob) Durtschi coming but Id die before Id let him pass me and win that one Figgins anchored the medley m beautiful form as he staved off Durtschi s last minute effort. 6-- WHAT CAN I say? asked Jones after the meet, The kids that we had put all their heart into it. Second place would have been nice, but Ill settle for fourth because of the kids efforts. Theyve been the hardest working kids Ive had in four years at Layton. It was serious business right from the beginning. MYRON HAS been our backbone. He loves this sport and showed it today. All of the kids have a special place for him in their hearts. I couldnt stop mentioning kids like Brimhall in the shot (took second behind VonCollin with a throw of Cooper in the high jump and many others, said Jones. worker. Falcon Gals Grab Second OGDEN - Weber High's womens track in eyes of and field club was "exceptional we didnt do that not Roger Buhrley. Its too overmuch too were but simply well, they first-yewomens Clearfield said the come," coach. THE EXCEPTIONAL performance that Buhrley was talking about was conducted at last weekend's Region One championship where the Warriors collected 31 '2 points to outdistance the Falcons who finished second with 112Vi points. Buhrley, who is looking for possible revenge against the Warriors this weekend at the state track meet, looked for a moment to next year. "Our minds and thoughts are on this weekend, but with the number of good athletes we have that are juniors and sophomores and the good number of junior high girls that are coming up, we hope to have something to build on for next year too, said Buhrley. THE CLEARFIELD coach figures realistically that his girls can battle with the top five teams in state this weekend.
