Nicole Burdett wrote this LAYTON - Studying basic subjects like English, writing, -- spelling and science can be fun as well as beneficial if the teacher works hard to intergrate the basic skills w ith creative activities, other subject areas and student interests. GERI SMITH is the kind of teacher that motivates her students by offering them a variety of cnallenging learning projects. Mrs. Smith is a 5th grade teacher at the East Layton Elementary School. LAST THURSDAY, afternoon, parents of her students were invited to attend an outstanding poetry recital and science fair. Poetry and science are not closely related subjects but through Mrs. Smiths imaginative talents, the students learned not only to study science and write poetry, but they also learned much about oral communication, writing skills, research techniques, art, penmanship and test taking. POETRY has been a yearlong part of the 5th on-goi- grade curriculum in Mrs. Smiths class. Students wrote short poems using a different form of poetry for each season , holiday or special occasion. Haiku, a simple form of Japanese poetry, was the first literary style the 5th grade Josh Pratt wrote this original Haiku verse, Ghostly winds I hear Creepy bats I see. It is Halloween." CINQUIN poetry follows an interesting pattern. The first line or title is one word. A description of the title consisting of two words follows. The third line is three action words. Re- source materials, booklets and text books were available to the students in their classroom. THE PROJECT was structured to include all the basic learning skills taught in the fifth grade. Each student used English skills, art, science, penmanship, math and speaking talents to complete the pro Teressa R. The Bronze, The Silver, The Gold and the Diamond Awards will be presented in October, 1984 at the National Federation Republican Womens Convention in Kentucky. The youngsters could choose any topic from the science units they studied AVAILABLE Smiths students listened to poetry recited by the students, they were encouraged to travel through the science exhibits. Each student was required to give a good explanation of their project and answer ques- ND smells, feelings and sounds. QUILT SOME OF the science fair even included original poetry. Surviving are his parents, two brothers and two sisters, Brent James Schmidt, Darren Eldred Schmidt, Amy Schmidt and Andrea Schmidt, all of of the Layton LDS Layton.
