' s 4: State Championship Soccer Dreams - SALT LAKE CITY The only team to beat the Davis Dart soccer team this year, got a rude awakening of what real revenge is. So rude that it brought their season to an abrupt halt. IN THE FIRST setting between these two clubs, the stakes were not as high as they were last Monday afternoon on a completely neutral field. At least for the Viewmont Vikings, it w as either life or death to their season. The revenge motive, which resulted in a 0 victory for the Darts, pinned the Darts name in at least one of the slots reserved for two superior soccer teams to battle it out for the 1983 4 A state soccer championship. 4-- ..' A 6-- . . Time for jubilation as Davis Ryan Smith celebrates his scoring the Darts final goal in the teams 0 state tournament victory DAVIS HOPED Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. to curb Brighton's appetite for revenge as they went after the coveted title. Davis made a definite believer out of many with a shocking 2 victory over the Bengals in the third round of the tournament. If the Darts couldn't tame the Bengals on Wednesday, theyll get another chance one day later on Thursday. With the success that has surrounded Bruce Bitners '83 squad, the community support hasnt taken much time to rally its support. Last Monday, despite the light rain that fell, Davis soccer enthusiasts filled their portion of the stands to the brim. S v,A over Viewmont Monday, 4-- Hawkins The Leader ' Lancer Nine Did Fine5 - A good thing didnt have LAYTON good ending last Friday afternoon at Derks Field in Salt Lake City. THE GOOD thing was the surprising rise of Brad Hawkins 1983 Layton High baseball team which wasnt supposed to win the Region One crown, but did. The bad thing was the Lancers disappointing and early exit from the state tournament. Not many, including the Lancers them 4-- selves, would have bet money they'd be battling for another region championship this spring. But Hawkins, the guy who has brought two region titles in three years to Lancerland, once again turned the trick of getting the kids to believe they could. HEADING INTO the state tournament, Layton was as optimistic as anyone, but optimism doesnt get you very far itself. Highland jumped on Layton early in the first game and the Lancers never did recover. After a week of drizzling, miserable weather, the Lancers resumed play again Friday but it was Bingham who capitalized on a seventh inning error to knock Hawkins and his crew out of state contention for good. It was a combination of senior strength and underclassman enthusiasm that Hawkins was able to blend together for 10 region games, so well in fact that Layton went 2 through the regular season. ONE DAVIS High star, Brian Bacon, who was elated beyond words, stated, Four years ago we lost the state championship to Bountiful and it's been a dream of mine ever since to get another chance at it. Brian agreed there couldnt be a better way to end his senior season. We've been playing together for so long, from way back since the youth leagues, that we were bound to begin having this kind of success. I just hope Wednesday we have our best game ever, said Brian. IF THERE was one technical thing that has brought us success, Id have to say it was in our team-effodrills in practice that has e made us We're not just a one or an eleven-platwo man team. said Bacon who notched two goals Monday afternoon in the victory over Viewmont. Confidence was spelled all over the face of Dart goalie, Scott Argyle. He commented, "Actually we were kinda nervous going into the Viewmont game, mainly because they were the only team to have beaten us. Then too, I was worried that w e hadn't come back to earth yet after beating Brighton. rt y THE BENGALS kinda awed many of us coming into the tournament, but after beating them once, we know it can happen again." Argyle, along with the rest of the defense, have combined to hold their state playoff opposition to just three goals in four games. But it was the Davis goalie w ho didn't take the credit. "I feel good, but it's not one individual thats done it, it's been done as a team unit, he said. BITNER, WHO has led Davis to tournament play for the past couple of years now, said it's been a systematic achieving of goals. We wanted the region title first and the state crown second. With kids that have been together now for four years, it's hard to deny them once they start believing they can get something. They believe it's their year and it is by golly. I agree with Brian that weve really downplayed the individual and it's gotten to the point thats it's been eleven people's w'in or loss, which is the way it should be. When Brian scores a goal, he's the guy who comes all the way to the other side of the field to congratulate the goalie for all the blocks he's made.lL BESIDES Bacons tw o goals last Monday;1f was Allen Stenquist poking in the first goal and Ryan Smith feeding in the final goal. After Brighton. Bitner commented, Just like region, these kids are hungry for titles again. 8-- THERE WAS some definite talent in the ranks this past season, but everyone of the seniors admit that Hawkins had more to do with the region championship march than anything else. All in all, Hawkins has been at Layton three years now and has successfully led Layton to the coveted state tournament every one of those years. One senior that was just happy to be there, was third baseman, Craig Kennedy. Craig was nailed with a line drive to the head during an indoor practice session and doctors gave him little chance of finishing the season. But Kennedy did come back and was able to play in both tournament games. The doctors told me that if I got hit again, I'd have some problems. But down to the tournament, I wanted to play so bad, that I had my parents get with Coach Hawkins and we made plans so I could, said Kennedy. Craig finished the season batting .300 and with only a few errors committed at first. BRETT TALBOT, who turned out to be the ace pitcher because of many unnoticed hours of hard work, said it was the most exciting year of baseball hed been a part of. Talbot commented, Coach Hawkins has a way of letting the teams better players know they can always do better. For me personally, coach never came out to the mound to chew me out if I was struggling. It was always a pat on the back and telling me to relax and concentrate. Brad Merrill, who anchored first base most of the season, liked his improvement over a year ago. Merrill also did some relief pitching. About Hawkins, Merrill said, I just grew up under him. When I came here as a sophomore, I was terrible. To see where I am today is incredible. 1 x SOU. r". I hit fair, but in critical situations I didnt come through like I should have, said Heath, About coach, nobody has instilled confidence in me like he has. As a sophomore he made me feel 10 feet tall and I consequently played like a star should. And I could never thank Hawkins enough for the skills he taught me. Some people said I was a natural and that may have been, but, without Hawkins around I could have never really found myself. He pushes you to the limit. ,For the season, he batted .464.
