Show I WEEKLY REFLEX-OA- VIS sports pg. 3 NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, APRIL 29, 1982 Keith Duncan inch. That was good enough for second place behind Mark Eggington of Roy. J.C. had the longest throw of the day until Marks last attempt. EVERY TIME we have a big meet I do a little better, said VonCollin of his efforts in the shot put, But I havent been doing that well in dual meets when it comes to the shot. I would like to be out around 57 feet before the end of the year. Its a long way, but I think I can do it. IN THE discus its just the opposite for me, said J.C., I was relaxed in the dual meet the other day when I threw for 161, but last weekend at Davis I was too tense and couldnt concentrate. He feels that if he can rid himself of bad throwing habits in the discus, he could be a state contender. He likes both events but likes the discus just a little better. VONCOLLINS 161-- 3 is a new school record in the discus, breaking the old Mark by several feet. The feat was accomplished in a dual meet against the Sky View Bobcats last week in Clearfield. Coach (John) Flint is the best coach that Ive ever had. He really does something for me. I believe that I can win at least one of these events this year, but next year Id like to win both for Clearfield, said VonCollin. Reflex Sports KAYSVILLE The 26th annual Davis High Track and Field Invitational produced plenty of sparkling results for men and woman athletes at Clearfield, Davis and Layton. TAKE FOR example Mike Cooper in the 400 meters which he won before having the medal taken away because of a DQ. It was only the second time that Mike had run this race. Coach Russ Jones explained that Layton ended up dropping their 400 meter relay team to position to Mike in the 400 meter run. Mike is such a strong athlete and we needed him where he could help the team the most, said Jones. I feel pretty good about things right now, said Mike, "Its not the greatest thing in the world to get disqualified, but Im going to practice and get my problem straightened out. MIKES BROTHER, Myron was second in the 800 meters behind a very strong Alan Parker. In fact Parker was so strong last Saturday that he busted the state record by three or four seconds in that event. I just cant seem to keep up with Parkers pace, he is a great one. But overall Im happy that I came out for track because its given me a chance to meet a lot of people that I would have been able to meet otherwise, said Myron. Hopefully hell be able to get more consistent in the discus because we feel pretty good about his consistency in the shot, said Flint. FLINT SAYS that VonCollin has come a long way and believes the big reason is that he has had some success. One sparkling moment for the Davis High girls track squad was late Saturday afternoon when Darlene Stockton, Allison Horsely and Julie and Diane Peterson put together an unbeatable stint in the medlay relay. four of L tah JULIE PETERSON made comment, Working as a team gets us through every time. There is just a good feeling about running this race. Diane Peterson said, I run the third leg and its my job to keep the lead like everyone else. FOUR OTHER medlay relay runners included the Layton High group who were very excited about winning their heat Saturday and shaving nine seconds off their old mark. The combination of David Kirkham, Floyd Kearl, Trevor Figgins and John Conolly appears to be getting and could figure well in the upcoming Region One IT WAS hard at first to get J.C. out and get him going but the job he is doing now is great. meet. Otliei members of the squad include Julie Peterson and Allison Horsely. COACH ANN Avondet commented, These girls get really excited when they do that medlay and sure came through today. When asked if it was a school record, Ann said it should have been if it wasnt The girls ALLISON commented, ahead of me get the big lead and its up to me to keep it. Stockston, who runs a 200 portion of the race said, We haven't been in a race yet where we havent had the lead. I just try to keep it. ONE OF J.C.s biggest motivations is to finish among the Top Four and earn a right to travel to Australia for a featured track and field meet. In describing J.C.s efforts, Coach John Flint commented, We felt all year long that we didnt have all the blue chip-pe- rs that we wanted, but there are a few and J.C. is one of them. ONE JUNIOR who could possibly win both the shot put and the discus in state would be J.C. VonCollin of Clearfield. Even though he has been more consistent in the shot, he still has the longest throw of anyone in the state in the discus. J.C.s longest shot put throw came last Friday at the Davis High Invitational when he tossed the shot 53 feet and 1 are Heading doum the stretch in the 1 the meet. in right) of Clearfield finished fourth iSmKmvi LMlMywaqri k awa aMw i ta ka I |
