Show ' WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, APRIL 29, 1932 sports pg, 2 N0RTH DAVIS LEADER, APRIL 29, 1982 ? ''ift wt County Schools Expand Circle Of Competition And Fare Well 0 The Davis High Invitational Track Meet was a preview of the stars that will likely shine during state. Layton has the speedy brothers, Mike and Myron. J.C. VonCollin is throwing his weight around in the discus circle. And the Davis girls relay team flies like the wind. Keith Duncan IM STARTING to run a little more consistent now, said Wright, There was a deadspot in there where he didn't have any workouts because of so many meets. In the region coming up, Wright claims his biggest tests will come from Davis of Roy and James of Sky View . Floyd Kearl has certainly been providing some talk for the Layton team. His throw of 168-- 4 in the javelin on Friday earned him a fourth place spot. The week previous to this he threw over 170 feet at the Weber State Invitational. Reflex Sports KAYSVILLE The 1982 Davis High Track and Field Invitational was another smashing success and for Clearfield, Davis and Layton, there were plenty of bright spots for all. FOR THE Darts, who were running and fielding on their home track, Spencer DcGraw didnt let anyone down in the 100 meters as the Davis senior finished first in that race ahead of Shepard of Bingham. However, the Bingham ace did come back to defeat DeGraw in the 200 meters. The brightest Dart highlights occurred on the womens side where Davis finally ended up finishing third with 56 points. Only Hillcrest and Weber could outclass the Lady Darts. TEAM, didn't know how we'd hen some pretty good kids decided to quit, said Kearl, "My main goal was to go out and break the school record in the javelin. The Layton senior did admit that with the addition of the Cooper brothers in the sprint and middle races, their performances have helped to spark things a bit. AS A do THE DART women were best of the field in the medley relay as Allison Horse-ly- , Darlene Stocktoil and Julie and Diana Peterson put together a race that qualified them for the state meet and gave them first place over Hillcrest and Alta. 1 w LAST YEAR it was Coach (Russ) Jones who got me started in the javelin. Some kid threw it close to where I was BEFORE JUMPING 13 feet in the meet, Lanes highest jump had been I26. It was a long ride up, said Fish-bur- n with a look of relief in his eyes. Fishburn exclaims that he used to high jump like his sister Tracy does. She was the champ last year as a junior and last Friday she claimed another first by jumping 52 in the women's high jump competition. 4-- I COULD only get up about 5'8 so I told myself there had to be something I could do better. That's when Coach Flint asked me to pole vault and when I went home and told my sister that, she just laughed, said Lane. It was Ed Lemmon, last year's pole vaulter, who taught Lane most of the basics. Poles breaking is one problem as Fishburn explains that he has already gone through three or four. IN REGION it will he Kemp of Bonneville to beat. Fishburn believes that at least 129 or 130 feet will have to be cleared in order to win the Region One title. My) on Cooper, Layton's talented 800-metace, can't quite beat the likes of Viewmonts Alan Paiker, but he has finished second in even major meet. Layton finished sixth last Saturday. 4-- One big reason Clearfield led the Davis High meet after one day. was because of senior pole vaulter, Lane'Fishburn. His jump of 13 feet earned him second place and got him to within one inch of the school's record. ' f Sheathing Plywood V4"x4'x8' - -- 3 Tab 22 Kitchen Cabinets i tiV. But overall the field was highly competitive in the medley as Hillcreast finished first with a clocking of 3:36.29. Clearfield was fourth' in that race with a time of 3:43.09. Clearfields Brian Wright has come on in the sprints and with his late season resurgence, the Falcon's chances of capturing a third straight region title seem ever dominating. He and DeGraw were ahead of the pack ia the 100 meters last Saturday but on came Shepard of Bing-ham about the 90 yard mark along with Warner of Viewmont. "Spence is just when it comes to the tough said Wright, "It seems that sprints," Warner and Shepard make their moves at the end of the races. Wright was fourth in the 100 meters. Coach liked the way 1 threw it and asked me to come out for the team," said Kearl. Since that time Kearl has dedicated himself to weights and technique and plans to break the school's record of 181 feet before the end of the year. All year he has averaged over 165 feet and very seldom has a bad day. His first meet of throw ing the javelin was at the Nate Long event last year where he finished fourth among somd' 60-7- 0 participants. "That said reafly helped my confidence. 47tr LU fc DFV. Lt STREET 100-mete- s Other superior efforts came from Suzie Orton in the 200 meters where she finished third and in fhe 100 meters w here she garnered a fifth place spot. Stockton was brilliant in the 100 meters and took a third place which was also true of the 400 meters where she finished third. DAVIS WAS also impressive in the women's relay races where they gathered in a second place in the 400 meter relay and a third place in the mile relay. For John Flint and his Clearfield Falcon men's team, there wasn't quite enough to overtake powerful Hillcrest who eventually took the team title, but the overall showing produced a second place for them in what could have been a state pretty good preview to what the meet will look like in a couple of weeks. Viewmont was third. East was fourth. Roy finished fifth and Weber captured sixth place. HILLCREST, which compiled 90 points, was led by distance star Jace Brewer who claimed the Most Valuable Athlete award. Brewer surprised everyone when he came from behind to defeat Alan Parker of Viewmont in the 3200 meters. Layton certainly had some highlights too. Though as a team the Layton boys' were 1th and the girls' were tied for 13th. there were some events they could respectively feel good about. Hon.?'. 8 1 , 30 . 55 h. 98 m. 4.34 m. 1.52 m.
