Several years ago, Pat Rhodes taught some young girls to shake pom poms and march in time to music so they could perform for half time shows at local basketball games. THIS WAS the beginning of The Stars, the first junior drill team in the U.S. Pat improved upon her idea. Junior drill teams became popular. IN 1970, The Stars moved into the old Clinton LDS Church. Ms. Rhodes started teaching classes in ballet and drill to children ages three through sophomores in high school. Pat Rhodes has become very successful at what she loves to do and at what she h dance and does drill to young people. best--teac- TODAY, there are 37 dance studios in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Texas and Washington under contract to the Stars Studio. Utahs six Stars teams consisting of 600 youngsters will perform at the opening football games of the L.A. Rams and the San Francisco 49ers this fall. OUTSTANDING EMPLOYEE - A old LAYTON member of the housekeeping staff and an experienced, surgical nurse have been honored at Davis North Medical Center as first-hal- f winners in annual competition sponsored by Humana Inc. KEITH Pratt was named the Outstanding Employee and Judy Bergold was named for Nursing Excellence. Both received $ 150 awards and a color portrait and will advance for regional judging w ith other recipients at Humana Inc. hospitals. A graduate of Roy High School, Keith joined the hospital housekeeping staff two years ago with the encouragement of his brother Ken, a nursing supervisor at the facility. According to a staff member who nominated Keith for the award, the young man "goes out of his way to help everyone on the staff. Energy, SINCE USE of Motoqua Vehicle State Park, located at 5600 West 2200 South, Calt Lake City, Salt Lake County, is no longer permitted, O.H.V. recreationists are requested to use the Lark Sand Dunes State Vehicle Park located near Lark, Salt Lake County. The Utah State Division of Parks and Recreation is currently planning the development of an O.H.V. park within the confines of the Jordan River State Parkway. Ms. Rhodes considers ballet to be basic to junior drill team techniques. The youngsters take lessons lasting two hours twice a week. Occasionally, they perform traditional ballet routines. THE NUMBER of performances a Stars team participates in varies according to the season. During the winter months when basketball is popular, the Stars are asked to perform almost weekly. Dance instruction is a natural vocation for Pat Rhodes. When she was growing up in PAT RHODES tries to visit each contracted studio at least once every six months. She helps start junior drill team programs by teaching instructors, giving motivational ideas, sharing professionally prepared dance lesson plans and developing drill routines when needed. The Stars members receive highly professional instruction from Ms. Rhodes and her assistants. Each teacher is required to prepare lesson plans. Each class is charted on LEISURE time is limited for person as busy as Pat Rhodes. Whenever she has a time to spare she spends it with her children, ages 12, lOand 2.
