Show I WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JANUARY 7, 1982 VIS K. Morrell Talks About Holiday Bowl, and BYU Football Team By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL and three to go. RIGHT NOW -- One down thats what Kyle Morrell of Brigham Young football team is thinking. One of the reasons that Kyle enrolled at the Y was to win a WAC championship pus last year I saw Jim McMahon who showed me his rings. I told myself right then and there I wanted four of those. KYLE WAS one of only two freshman to see a lot of varsity playing time this past season for the championship Cougar team. Wide receiver Glenn Koslowski was the other. ring. "During my visit to the cam At the start of the year the Districts Policy In Question? By DAVE WIGHAM On the outside it appears the Davis School District has set up a policy that discriminates against athletic teams. THOSE PEOPLE in Farmington do have a reason for their thinking. Several parents have called me to see if I could dig up some information in to regards the policy the district has established concerning out of state travel. As it stands now no athletic team can travel outside of Utah. Yet by the same token the district allows bands, debate teams and drill teams to go outside Utah for their competition. word was to bring Kyle along slowly. The coach, Dick Felt, didnt want to throw me in right away in case I lost my admitted Kyle. confidence, Soon, though, the need arose for another defensive back and the coaches turned to Kyle for help. FOR NOTHING HAS been said but the chances look good for Kyle earning a starting spot next year. Returning next fall will be Kyle, Kevin Walker, John Mannion and Tom Holmoe. There are four spots open and these four could very well be the starters. THE COUGARS have re- cently returned from their Holiday Bowl appearance, a week that Kyle wont soon forget. They treated us like royalty. Every day we had some luncheon we had to attend and then they fed us great food all week. Each day we also had to visit the various spots in the area like the ships in the dock. When it was all over they had given us all some great watches, shirts, sweaters, mugs and glasses all with the Bowl emblem on them. We made quite a haul. Kyle did admit the players were given a lot of free time, which he spent with some of the older veterans of the club, We would eat breakfast together, then practice a couple of hours, eat lunch and then we were on our own for a while. he said. He went on to add that some of the players made the annual trip into Mexico but that he usually went with Kyle Whittingham, John Adams and Gym Kimball to the beach. THE BIGGEST reason, or at least the first one given each time, is that there is enough competition in the state for athletic teams. First, they have duel events with one school going d with another. Then on to the regional battle and finally the state event. I can see their thinking here. Sure if Viewmont wanted to they could schedule enough people in state to take care of their needs. The problem, is to my way of thinking, so could the Vike debate team. Every other high school in the state has a debate team just like they have a basketball team. Debate has duel meets with each other, they also have a region and state affair. head-to-hea- THEN THE policy making people point to the fact that if you let one sports related team travel then the others will all want to go. True, if football gets to go to Idaho to play then the baseball team will want to go to Arizona. However, that same baseball team will want to go if you let the drill team or band go to Colorado. DURING THE season Kyle actually only played in one and a half games on the junior varsity team. That was enough time for him to come up with three interceptions. He did record one interception with the varsity team but the play was nullified so hes still looking for his first for the varsity side. Now that this year is over, all eyes are focussed on next season. The big questions being asked about the BYU team next year, especially, with the graduation of McMahon. Kyle answered some of those questions: THE THINKING here is a little weak to me. They say if you let one go the others will want to. Thats just whats happening now. Sports cant see why if cant go the bands get to. Im not down on bands, debate or drill teams. I like them all All Im saying to make the policy for everyone. JIM HILL, the man in charge of athletics for the district, noted these two reasons. "The district just feels they can get as much competition without going out of state and save on the travel and cost. Now do the try and convice me the band or debate cant same. Bonnie Durrance, the director of public relations for the district, offered these words. The district feels the athletes get enough competition in state. There are so many sporting events going on that if you let everyone go the cost for those teams would be freshman the jump from high school ball to the college game is a big step and Kyle was no exception. "It was a huge jump, bigger than I thought it would be. Its the speed thing, everything happens so fast on the college level. In high school a defensive back could cheat a little but in college if you give the receiver an inch the quarterbacks will get them the football. Kyle saw quite a lot of playing time on the varsity team. He was used mainly as a fifth defensive back on certain passing plays. He earned his letter as a first year man, a fete hes proud of. I always thought I could pay but just didnt know if Id get the chance, he confessed. AFTER TALKING to some of the district people and a member of the school board, I have come up with about three reasons for their thinking. Up front the district reports that the principals of the high schools were in favor of this policy of not letting athletic teams travel outside the state. So basically it was an administrative decision and the district people agreed with it. they ANY Speaking of McMahon, just how good did Kyle think he was? Hes the best. As defensive backs were taught to disguise our coverages. Against other quarterbacks we could confuse them, but McMahon has a great talent for picking up the coverages no matter what we tried. WHO ARE the people to watch for next season? There are some great people in the wings who will become household names next year. We have a receiver named Adam Hazeberry who can fly and wholl be great. Louis Wong is a huge lineman who wants to be the strongest player on the team and hell do it. We have others, but those two standout. he responded. One of the toughest games for Kyle this past year was against Utah. All those coaches were great to me for so long it was hard to realize I was out there trying to beat them. I made a lot of friends at Utah through my brother," he said. RIGHT NOW the football players aren't doing anything. When they return to school theyll pick up on the weights and running. Then comes spring ball and the year starts all over again. At the conclussion of each season, head coach LaVell Edwards has a personal interview with each player. "He has a file on every player and talks to you about the next year. He told me I needed to work on coming up hard out of my back peddle. It was a great interview because hes always positive with us, he admitted. KYLE IS looking forward to spring ball and a shot at a starting position. Hes anxious to get into the weight room to pick up some additional poundage. Im tired of being the smallest guy on the field," he laughed. Keith And Dave Make Their Picks For Fridays Games the Leopards have a good team and a strong tradition to back they up. By KEITH DUNCAN In the Bountiful-Eaclash, the Braves are the favorite in this one. They are coming off an impressive while the Leopards are down from a year ago. st pre-seas- WOODS CROSS and Highland are two great basketball schools but Highland appears to have the horses to go all the way this year. Coach Ted Smith this of Roy says the Rams are the team to beat in and have to. Ill to agree year Its time for Davis to get serious about their basketball play and come Friday night with Brian Taylor and Co., they will do just that. Look for the Darts to get better as Region Four play progresses, starting of course with a win over Viewmont. 4-- A LAYTON HAD a four game winning streak snapped by Kearns but with Keith Williams getting more familiar with his teammates, the Lancers will open their Region One schedule with a victory over the Bobcats. It won't be easy battling away in Smith-fielbut Coach Doug Moons boys have what it takes. Clearfield will get back on the winning track against Weber, but it wont be easy. They have lost three straight games and despite being a strong team in the early portion of the season, they have never had an easy time with the Warriors in Pleasant View. d, By DAVE WIGHAM Viewmont at Davis. This could prove to be the best matchup of the night. Viewmont definitely has the height advantage over the Darts with John White and Scott Mabey (68). Davis has Brian Taylor in their colors for this battle and hes been killing people in the preseason wars. Its no secret to beat Davis you have to stop Taylor but many have tried and been unable to do so. The Vikes have struggled at the guard line this season mainly due to inexperience. (68) IF THE Viking guards can get the ball inside then the visitors have a chance. Mike Gardner is a good coach and hell find a way to take away that inside game and the Darts will ride the left hand of Taylor for the win. Bountiful at East: Go by preseason records and the Braves look like a cakewalk in their opener but THE LEOPARDS lost a lot of folks to graduation from their state title team of a year ago but they have Their last outing improved with each practice game. a good Cottonwin over was a convincing 19 points wood club. Face facts though the East team doesnt have the talent of a Danny Bell or Richie Weight. Bountiful has all the tools to win this battle but theyll have to play good ball to do it. WOODS CROSS at Highland: What a way to have to start off league play to battle the Rams on their own floor. Keep in mind though, the Cats beat High- land there a year ago. The Rams have a great tandem in Jon Judkins and Robert Maxwell, a couple of players who have been around for three years. Many feel this is the year of the Rams. THE KEY to this battle is at the guardline where Blair Kent, Greg Gurr and the rest will be tested with the patented Ram press. If the Cat guards can handle the pressure and get the ball inside, then Richard Johnson, Gregg Housekeeper and Bruce Bishop can hurt the Rams. Highland is always tough early in the season, favor the Rams in this one. Layton at Sky View. This could be a very interesting matchup. The Bobcats are small and quick, but so are the Lancers. Keith Williams is the standout here as Sky View has no one to stop the fast emerging star. CLYDE NELSON is the first year head man of the Bobcats and seasoned Doug Moon could have a few tricks in store for the rookie. Its tough to beat the Sky View bunch up in their territory so look for Williams to have a good game but the Bob cats will get the home cooking for the win. Clearfield at Weber. Look out world the Falcons are fighting mad. They didnt enjoy losing their last game to West a week ago and are out to avenge it. WEBER HAS been an up and down club this season already mainly due to inexperience. If you go by common opponents both have played Bountiful. Clearfield beat the Braves in the first game of the year while Weber was ambushed by the Bountiful side. Jim will be tough to replace, but the team has a lot of confidence in Steve Young and enormous." Kimball. I honestly feel we can win it again and get back to another bowl game.
