Show WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER. JANUARY 7, 1982 REFLEX-DA- VIS Former Lancer Ov By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON Everywhere Bob Overly decides to go, hes had to prove himself. It hasnt been a piece of cake but no one said it would be either. HE MOVED to Layton with his family in 1976 and played his senior high school football with the Lancers. Though not blessed with a bunch of skill, he combined quickness and strength to become Laytons right defensive end. "Because he moved here so late (missing fall conditioning and the first two games), it was hard for us to find a place for him at first, said Carter Cook, his defensive coach, But the kid was tough and we couldn't keep him out of the lineup. NOT ONE major college in Utah even sent him a letter for consideration for a scholarship so he headed south for Snow College. From the sixth team as a walk-ohe propelled himself all the way to the star defensive player of the season and was one big reason why Snow earned national recognition as the season came to a close. n Bob Overly, who performed with Layton in 1 977, just wrapped up a brilliant career at San Jose State. He looking toward play in the NFL. HIS DECISION to move to California and compete on the mjor college level with the big boys at San Jose State was the next big test. But as Bob says, "I was going there to become an and try to set a school record to the most number of sacks in a single season." He did just that while piling up other honors and helping to lead the Spartans to their best season ever as a football school. is now Gardner, Yerkovich Are - ' Coach Mike Gardner says SALT LAKE CITY doesnt have fun at every prep basketball game he coaches, except when he tangles with Judge High. he team. pre-seas- BUT THE time to stop proving himself, doesnt stop here. In fact its now reached the critical stage. Overly wants to become a professional football player and come this April when he gets drafted into the NFL, hell battle the greatest odds to keep his love for playing football alive. A couple of former Lancers, Thats why we will always play Judge the last game of the year. There isnt a team in the state that could better prepare us for league play, said the veteran Davis coach. DAVIS CONTINUED their winning ways over Judge with a 6 victory on Dec. 30th that closed Orlando Nelson and Rod Buckwoldt, got their crack at the pros but both found the GARDNER SAYS that as long as he remains at Davis, his teams will always play Judge Memorial on their basketball schedule. After coaching well over 100 basketball games and seeing that many or more, Gardner says the greatest basketball game he ever witnessed was a contest between Judge and Davis in which Davis won 2 with Dean Hunger in the lineup for the Darts. 61-5- schedule for both teams. The final out the tour1981 victory hooks onto the dramatic 1981 nament victory in which Davis knocked over Judge in the first round. In 13 years of coaching prep basketball at Davis High, Gardner admits that Jim Yerkovich, the coach at Judge, is his best friend in high school basketball, outside his own cousin Joel Gardner, who heads the Mt. Bob, however, has every intention of making it big. 87-8- ONE STATISTIC that Gardner wont forget is the string of five home games against Judge when the Bulldogs used to battle Davis in the same league. Four of those games went into overtime and the fifth was won by Davis by a single point. San Jose State has left its share of graduates in the pros and it appears that Overly could very well be another. BOB OVERLY, the father, says his oldest son has made it big when most would probably fail under the same kind of conditions. Uncle Sam bounced us around for so long, that Bob didn't have a chance to settle down and be somebody. When we moved here in '76, it finally gave him a chance to blend in and try to make a name for himself. MOST KIDS wouldnt have made it, but Bob has some confidence in himself that is hard to measure, continued the father. Overly, who has never missed a game in his career, completely dedicated himself to weight training upon graduation at Layton. And as far as the hurts and bruises, Overly says that is just part of the game. You have to live with that, he says. trophy THE GAME of football is just 60 minutes of fun for me. Saturday afternoon or night is the best way for me to relieve some frustrations. Its been my life, he concluded. Hopefully Overly will continue his love for playing the game as a professional. He thinks of himself as a quiet, solemn person and winners and many but during the past two years at San Jose, the Spartan defenders have spent very little time on the field because of a superb defense and a potent offense. As an outside linebacker this past season, Bob became e the leader in sacks as he totalled 22 in 1981.
