No. 2, Layton, boy. Frank and Astrid Kramer, 315 N 900 E., Kaysville, Beware of Bargains in Life Preservers, or Health care Parachutes, cure can "Doctor, my migraine you headaches?" "Of course, my dear. It will be no problem at all." "Doctor, I have a persistent pain in my leg. Can you cure it?" 1 don't see why we can't take care of that little detail this afternoon, madam." "Doctor, I can't sleep, and I'm so nervous all the time; you can cure me, can't you?" "Would I be here if i couldn't?" 1 have always wondered how a practitioner can actually come right out and say he can CURE an ailment or complaint of a patient," Doctors Barton and Bums of the Chiropractic Care Center were observing. By all professional and ethical standards, a doctor is surely remiss if he claims to be able to cure anything. Yet, it's apparent that many persons afflicted with distressing problems do, in fact, EXPECT literal cure when they seek the doctor's care; and certain doctors will claim the power and knowledge to do just that. 1 guess you could say the word 'cure' has been stricken from our vocabulary here at our Chiropractic Center," adds Dr. Bums. "We speak rather of the permanent removal of the cause' of a problem, or effective solution,' or of a significant return to health,' But I think that in every sense of the word, cure' implies a total eradication of the health disturbance with a consequent, absolute return to perfect health. And I think that ability can be attributed only to God," concluded Dr. Barton. Trankly, I am leery of anyone who claims to be able to cure anything." Dr. Bums reasons that actions speak for themselves; therefore, if a doctor claims to cure, he is, in a sense, trying to talk his patient into believing in his power so that he will not have to effectively demonstrate his ability. "You'll find an odd situation often involving these "cure claimers,'" says Dr. Barton. "It always seems that their claims include getting the job done quickly and at less cost." Yet it stands to reason," continues Dr. Bums "that total cure would either take longer or could command a much higher fee if it were simply a matter of snap judgment or snapped fingers." Dr. Barton is convinced that the ingredients that make up the solution to a health problem are a thorough and responsible diagnosis, and proper and effective treatment, together with the patient's understanding and cooperation. "Bargain-lik- e speed would render the first two requisites impossible," he says; "and the talk of a quick cure would render the third Improbable."
