Show t I 4 WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JULY 16, 1981 Fans Comments All I can think about is the brand new football season coming up. With a baseball strike in full force this isn't a very difficult anyway. BIT MY great thrills about a new football season have suffered a let dow n lately, mainly because of the annual prev tew football magazines that are covering all the racks in town. See, I'm a Jimmy McMahon fan. 1 really don't care much for Bngham Young University but when it comes to football and the things that McMahon can do with a football, my mind is made up that there isn't a finer college quarterback in the nation. BUT HAVE you noticed all the magizines that are talking about the upcoming football season' How can they neglect such a superstar like McMahon0 With all the things that McMahon did last year and the tremendous abilities he and his team have in store for the fall, how can they not pick him without question to be tne preseason first team Who really picks? MCMAHON WILL end up showing all of them in the end. I'll go on record right now by saying that McMahon will finish number one in total offense and passing when the season's stats are finally put together. He just might w in the Heisman MOUTH WATERING TASTE By KEITH DUNCAN unusual instruments used for." (The following is a two-pastory highlighting the fun and achievement that Tom Packer and Bruce Bitner, two Davis High coaches, have received from preparing and serving their own homemade Chinese dinners.) What's life without a little fun? And to go a little further, what's life without an honest to goodness homemade Chinese dinner, more than once or twice a year? BITNER USED to walk up and down the streets of Hong Kong and simply be awed at the cooking techniques demonstrated in a foreign country. Food and cooking in Hong Kong and China is amazing. Once you get on the good side of a Chinese cook and having found some common ground, youve made a friend forever, he said. TWO DAVIS High athletic coaches, Tom Packer and Bruce Bitner, have found the fun and a Chinese dinner that will have you drooling by just talking about it. Bitner inherited his desire to learn Chinese cooking and lifestyle while serving and LDS mission in Hong Kong while Packer picked up his interest in oriental cultures in a more round about way. PACKER SAYS he owes a lot to a group of Chinese people who used to rent part of a business building with him. They became delinquent on the rent and were forced to move on, leaving behind a collection of their cookware and ornaments. Being the kind of curious guy I am." said Packer, "I couldn't but help get interested in what a "Wok" and the other were SO BITNER and Packer, with little more than a desire to have fun, chummed up together and began preparing Chinese dinners. In the beginning of their endeavor it was friends and family who were the guinea pigs." However, those particular friends didn't quite classify themselves as guinea pig when the dinner was over. Instead they were making return engagements for more future dinners. WE KNEW we could put on a good dinner but we didn't realize the exact cost of one. I think we went in the hole on the first two, then finally got smart, said Bitner. Since that time the pair of Dart coaches have put on outdoor and indoor Chinese dinners for small and large parties Tom Packer, who coaches track and field at Davis and Bruce Bitner, the soccer coach at the same school, have a recipe for soy sauce that will make your mouth water just talking about it. Of course that is just a small part of the total Chinese dinner they put together for large groups and parties. I BELIEVE the most people we have served in one setting is about 60. said Packer. "And when we get that many we have to resort to hiring alike. Their groups of guests have included church groups, coaching clans, military groups from nearby Hill AFB and numerous other types of gatherings. another cook." Bitner and Packer prepare the major part of the dinner at their homes before packing up their gear and taking it to the actual site of the feast. They have cooked on the law n under a big oak tree, in the garage, the kitchen and just about anywhere else you could set up a w ok and the rest of their cooking gear. PACKER, WHO coaches track and Bitner w ho heads the soccer team, both get a kick out of the Chinese preparations. If it got to the point w here it was w ork, rather than fun, we'd probably bag it," said Packer. "It's appealing to see people's faces light up when they begin tasting our food. Its been a world of fun cooking with Tom." said Bitner. -- too. Then will come a first round selection in the college draft. I'm not saying that Stanford's John Eiway isn't to be considered as one of the nation's top quarterbacks, but when putting him up against McMahon, there is no comparison. JUST wish some people would take a good hard look at McMahon before they begin printing some of the things that come out. 1 Patrick Hanley a Jim McMahon fan Are high school sports in Utah at the stage in w hich specialization in athletics can be justified I seriously doubt it especially being involved in high school sports the way I've been over the years. IT JUST seems that if the high school you attend has been noted for its basketball tradition over the years, you had better count on giving up every thing else in sacrifice to make and stay with the team. That might mean giving up a vacation with your family during the summer just so you can attend all of the basketball camps.
