STATE BCI CHAMPS Bv KEITH DUNCAN Even Goliath would have had a tough time with this crew. TEN OF Davis Countys top prep basketball stars, who combined some towering strength under the basket and a lot of quickness there and everywhere else, blitzed a gathering of Roy and Weber players for the summer championship in the annual Basketball Congress International tournament. The championship squad then determined its six top players and combined them with six of the state's other elite to form the second of two Utah teams that will represent Utah in the national tournament held each year at BYU. This years tourney will run from Aug. 4 to Aug. 8. FOUR BOUNTIFUL players, three from Viewmont, two from Davis and one from Woods Cross formed the tight-kni- t group that won this year's state title. The next best ten in Davis County formed a B team which won two games and eventually played for the consolation championship RON JOHANSEN, the head mentor at Viewmont High, has coached BCI teams for three years now and considers this one to be one of the better Utah teams in years. THIS MAY sound funny, but we might have a chance to take it this year, said Johansen about the national title. Utah players will be battling some of the finest prep basketball talent in the country including teams from New York and Los Angeles. It is estimated that 75 percent of the players w ho come to Provo in August will be higly recruited by major universities. Last year we had some good talent too, but just didnt quite click together. This year the kids have played more like a team and some even took away from their own games to help the team," commented the Viking coach. THE 1981 team consists of Isatt, Reed Fames, Rich Blake Weight, Brian Taylor, Lex Brown, Brent Lange, Scott Mabey, John White, Rich Johnson and Dan Bell. Johansen's assistant coach was Wayne Baker of Woods Cross High. WHITE, MABEY, Isatt.
