STILL UNDEFEATED By KEITH DUNCAN Ron Hepworth, shortstop and assistant coach for the Hobart entry in the 1981 sum- mer Clearfield Recreation Softball League, probably said it best, We work well together at work and on the softball field. THE HOBART squad dealt National Distribution Systems a defeat last Wednesday evening to stand with Idlewire Pet Care as the only two undefeated men's softball teams in the city's Wednesday night leaque. On Wednesday of this week, Idlewire and Hobart were to battle for sole possession of first place. The victor will most likely coast the remainder of the schedule and claim the Wednesday night championship. THIS IS the first season Hobart has fielded a softball team and ironically it wasn't anyone on the local level that first thought of the idea. As Hepworth explained, management back east cided that a good w ay to de- prom-ot- e their name could be through athletics. So the push for Hobart plants around the nation focused on organizing softball teams for the summer schedule. THERE HAPPENS to be two Hobart groups at the Freeport Center located SalelDatesVJujylLiihliyVJulyllS 7-- in Clearfield but a ruling was laid dow n in the beginning that the two groups could not mix players to form a team. So Hobart went on to field two teams. After first trying to enter the Ogden softball league and failing to signup in time, the two Hobart clubs entered into the newly formed Clearfield League. THE HOBART team which is tied for the league lead with a perfect 0 record practiced at least two nights a week for nearly two months before play began in Clearfield. I guess we kinda got serious about this thing, said Hepworth. GARY SIMONSEN, who serves as the head coach, claims at least 80 percent of the team members play at least two nights per week, one in Clearfield and another elsewhere. It appears to be a big thing every Tuesday at work when over the loud speaker the next day's game is broadcast. "We get psyched up about it, said Simonsen. HOBART HAS won the majority of their games by farily good margins, but the closest game happened to be the battle with the other Hobart squad which hasn't won quite as many games. The final score was 2 and is the only game the undefeated Hobart squad hasn't scored at least ten runs. Members of the team include Don Howell, first base; Paul Erving, second base; Ron Hepworth, shortstop; Joe Witchie, third base; Ken Wells, third base; Brent Bohn, Paint catcher; Gary Simonsen, rover; Dave Wiggins, left field; Dean Twehues, center field; Doug Handy, right field; Emmet Hof, rover and catcher; Steve Jaramillo, pitcher and Reg Pacheco, rover.
