Show k WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, OCTOBER 25, 1979 Bountiful Defeats Highland By DAVE WIGHAM - BOUNTIFUL Circle today on your calendar. It could be the start of another war in this city. REASON FOR this battle is last weeks high school football results. Bountiful beat Highland while the Woods Cross club was manhandling Viewmont. This left these three clubs in a tie for second place in Region Four. Since only two could go to the state playoffs a coin flip was held with Highland winning. This put the Rams into the state playoffs in third Jhen Woods Cross and Bountiful decided to meet each other today on View-mont- s place. field for the right to go as the second place team. IN THE regular season meeting between the two clubs youll recall the Wildcats came up with a great defensive effort in downing the Braves on the Bountiful field. Since that time both clubs have come on strong. Bountiful lost to West but then came up with wins over Davis and (hen the all important one last week'against Highland." THIS WAS First thing that got to me was the type of organization of the Jazz. Believe me they are first class all the way. They take care of the press in the best way possible. v X EVEN THE weekly newspapers, that are often overlooked by some professional teams, are treated like they mean something to this organization. Dave Freedman and his staff do a great job in making the press feel comfortable and welcomed. Then to sit there and see all these guys that have been television stars only to most of us in Utah, to come out before your very eyes is unreal. I mean to see the likes of Kent Benson of Indiana, Marques Johnson and Richard Washington of UCLA, Pete Maravich of LSU, and James Hardy of San Francisco in real life is a thrill in itself. THESE GUYS were always on television, fighting for a now to see them do their thing national collegiate title a few feet in front of your eyes is something of a dream world. YOU think the difference between high school and college is vast, then check out the difference between IF these guys and the college stuff. Both have something to offer. As for the Jazz themselves, they are a young club but one that always hustles and tries. Sure they are a few players and years away from a championship caliber operation, but they are exciting to watch. By DAVE WIGHAM KAYSVILLE - This Wed- nesday when the Darts of Davis take their football act up north to Logan they put their unbeaten region record on the line against the once beaten Logan club with the winner claiming first place. LOGAN, THE defending region and state champions, have lost only one game this season to Box Elder. They downed Bear River last Friday morning 20-- to set up this classic battle with the Darts. The game was played on Friday since they had a power failure on Thursday night. The Grizzlies didnt have an easy time with the Bears as at the half they held onto a slim lead. The second half though belonged to the Logan club as Norm Steele ran wild while their defense completely shut off the Bears. In fact for the game the Bear River club came up with a minus 30 yard rushing total and only 73 3 7-- 3 yards total offense through the air. LOGAN ALMOST topped that total with a single run as Steele came up with a 65 yard touchdown run in the second half. Football Emotion Davis meanwhile was handing Ben Lomond a 30-setback as the Darts established themselves as a running team again. If the Logan crew has scouted the Darts the last two games, they have to be worried, in 9 By PETE FRITCHIE The emotional and desire factor are so much a part of football, that young players are (again this year) putting a reckless determination into winning. Fans, coaches and alumni traditionally put too much stress on it. ON THE same day recently, a Florida University player quit the game after suffering a serious Drain concussion. A player at the University of South Carolina died in the dressing room and serious, pei maneiit body injuries have been suffered by other players every week this season. Youngsters can be built up to such an emotional pitch by their elders that they recklessly disregard serious injury. With newspapers, fans 50,000 television, watching, coaches and an entire campus applying the pressure, what youngster is capable of viewing all this in perspective? WHAT youngster can that a game school and learning are vastly more important? realize its just Cross defeat. But then the Braves suffered two shutouts in a row and their sudden loss offense cost them their rankings and possibly a trip to the state tournament. In their first meeting the Wildcats led by Mark Tate, Jason Whitney, Mark Wall, Jack Williams and Brent Jensen won the battle in the of them hard, although this reporter picked them as the surprise club even before the first kickoff. They have molded into one of the finest clubs in the state. As one coach noted !vFrom end to end oh offense there isnt a better Unit tharfthe Woods Cross club. They get after people. BOUNTIFUL was considered a strong club from the outset, being ranked first in the state until the Woods To Face Bountiful Again j. trenches which ultimately led to the victory. In all of their wins the'pay of 'these linemen have been one of the mam reasons for success. BOUNTIFULS defense held together again last week when the Braves needed the win over Highland. People like Cory Hilton, Curtis Sampson, Clark Mabey, one outing they passed effec- tively against Bountiful and then last week they ran over Ben Lomond. WHILE THE Logan crew boasts their fine runner Steele, the Darts have about four that they feel are good Jeff ones. Quarterback Emery showed he could run with the ball as he ran over for two scores, while backs Brent Hatch, Keith McNally and Scott Hatch can also carry the ball when called on. Davis did put the ball in the air when they needed as evidenced by a 12 yard scoring strike from Emery to Bill Schryver in the third period. THE DARTS have turned into a fine football team, one that is well balanced with the run and the pass. In past seasons the Davis clubs have been known for their running attack but this group has also shown signs of a great passing attack. Logan in the past couple of years lhas become known as a team that has just about their book. They usually come up with double reverses, double passes, flee flickers and anything else that is legal in football. THE Grizzlies throwing anything at the Darts and in return the Davis crew being able to either throw or run, it should make for a great game for the fans. WITH The game is scheduled for Logan at 4 p.m. but at press time the coaches were talking about an earlier kickoff. If the Darts win they claim the title, if Logan wins the two share the crown with Logan going as the number one team to playoffs. Skating Club (IFSC) participated.
