Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, OCTOBER 4, 1979 Bountiful To Meet West Fri. Football Regions By DAVE WIGHAM Feature Tight Races By DAVE WIGHAM that this battle between the Braves and the Panthers three leagues around the area are turning into classic would be the game of confrontations each week. 2-- The Braves were riding high into last weeks encounter with the Wildcats before the Cats stunned them shutting off the usually 7-- potent Bountiful offense. Some fains indicated they felt the Braves were looking past the Cats and toward the West encounter, others noted that it was that old homecoming game jinx that seems to plague most Bountiful teams. WHATEVER the reason the Braves cant afford to look back, but must now look ahead to the Panthers. A West win would more or less assure the Panthers of the region title with only one more league game left after Friday, a Bountiful win would throw the race up for grabs again. These two clubs know each other as well as two clubs big upset last Friday in downing the Logan crew. THEN THE big win came up on Bountifuls field where the Woods Cross club took a thrilling victory over the previously unbeaten Braves. Woods Cross climbed back into contention with the win for a state playoff berth. Viewmont is still looking for their first win despite playing some good ball this year. Many had said that anyone in the league could beat anyone else but few believed it until last Friday when teams started doing instead of saying. AS OF LAST week the standings are like this: Region One shows Bonneville and Sky View on top with identical records, following them is Layton and Weber with records then Clearfield and Roy are at IN REGION Four West High has taken sole possession of first place with their spotless record, next comes with Woods Cross and Bountiful and Highland at South at Viewmont is These last weeks should be exciting for the local fans, big games this week see Bountiful at West and Davis traveling to Box Elder. 0 0 1 3-- 0 both clubs were involved in 0-- football camps THEY HAVE met each other through the years in the with a 0 mark following their win over Ogden last 2-- Friday. Not many planned on the other club being Box Elder though, but the Bees shocked the experts with a win over defending state champion Logan. WHAT MAKES the Bee win even more impressive was that it took place on the Logan home field and ended the Grizzlies seventeen-gam- e winning streak. All of a sudden the experts are looking at this weeks encounter under the lights in Brigham City as a key to the region title. Keep in mind the Darts still have to face Logan. DAVIS LOOKED very impressive in their win over the tough Tiger crew on Friday. The first time they touched the football they marched down the field and scored with senior quarterback Jeff Emery taking it in the final four yards. Then after halting the Ogden crew the Davis club proceeded to score again with Keith McNally taking it the last five yards. The Dars increased that lead to 0 with Lynn Adams scoring on a double reverse play with Scott Smith adding all three extra points. IN THE second half though the Tigers made a game of it by putting two quick touchdowns up on the board to pull within a touchdown. Then the Darts put together one of 21-- their patented ground games $nd chewed up 63 yards and a touchdown with Emery going in from the one. Meanwhile up in Logan the Bees were getting a great effort from senior running back Evan Bingham, the man the Darts will have to stop to win. BOX ELDER is a small but game club who simply keep coming at teams. The best illustration of the Bees is the play of their tackle Matt who although Smoot, weighing only 140 pounds uses his quickness problems. Davis has to together throughout the summer. Darts Will Play For League Lead battle for the league title. THIS IS the week for that battle. There are only two chibs left with unblemished records after two weeks and they collide this week. Many figured that the Darts would be one of those unbeaten clubs and indeed they are create established themselves as a top contender in the league while the Bees have been a surprise club not many took which seriously until their win over Logan. The Darts are taking them very seriously this week. THE WINNER will be alone at the top of Jhe heap while the loser will drop back down into the log jam for second place. state tournament with the West club winning every time they have faced. In fact the Bountiful teams havent been able to score on West in their last three meetings. Bountiful faithfuls still believe in this club and that they will rebound from the loss. Some even think of the loss as a blessing in disguise. Now the kids know they have to play hard and win against West, noted one fan. BOUNTIFUL moved the ball well at times against the Wildcats mainly in the air as their usually potent running attack was more or less shut off. Coach Kim Petersen will be working overtime this week to get the likes of Curtis Sampson, Clark Mabey, Breen Arnst, Lane Christiansen and .Scott Wright creating those holes for running backs Mike Rob Cottle and Hollingsworth. Kevin Kott is a fine passer and Mike Haslam, Jim Perkins and Mike Woodbury can also catch the ball. The Braves gave up their first touchdown on defense last week and that made Cory Hilton, Jon Robertson, Tim Murray, Kurt Thompson, Russ Jensen and others mad. Theyll be roaring to go this week. Inter-mur- al At Layton LAYTON Elementary -- Layton School is one of the few elementary schools in the Davis School District that conducts an inter-mursports program for the students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, EACH afternoon, participants from the upper grades compete against each other. The boys play flag football. The girls play either volleyball or kickball. Each child is placed on a team. While winning the intermural championship is important, Harold Berg, the schools principal, feels the benefit of the inter-mural win- program extends beyond ning to the more important concepts of learning the rules of the games, learning the principles of teamwork and good sportsmanship and just having fun. n BOY CARPET CLEANERS Over 20 Yrs. West is unbeaten and alone on top of the region clubs with a perfect 0 league mark, the Bountiful club is right behind them along with Highland at UP NORTH in Region One where the Layton and Clearfield schools are battling for playoff spots the Lancers lost a heartbreaker last week by one point to unbeaten Bonneville. But the Lancers did serve notice that they are a team to reckon with in the league. The Falcons are finding things rough in the league with an 2 record but they are far from being out of contention yet. Davis has risen to the top in their region, along with Box Elder, and could take over sole possession with a win this Friday. Everyone thought that the Darts and Logan would be the top two clubs but the Bees came up with the Word out of KAYSVILLE Region Four a few weeks ago was that down the line the . FOR BOUNTIFUL to win theyll have to stop the running of Joey Price and Reggie Wilson. These two are heralded as two of the best in the area. When the Panthers throw, quarterback Carey Lloyd looks to Wilson out of the backfield. Kerry Blosch is the top lineman for West and hes no stranger to the Braves.
