The remaining 10 of your energy bill covers just about everything else lighting, cooking, operating your TV set and all your small appliances. While it is prudent, of course, to turn off lights when not in use and the TV set when its not being watched your greatest saving on home energy costs can come mostly from heating and cooling. So lets consider this check list. Its designed to help you plug up the energy holes at your house which may be leaking dozens of dollars out of your wallet each month: 1. Is my home properly insulated for the most efficient heating and cooling? Do I haiv the right Recommended R values second-large- st five-poi- relating to insulation of attic in the floors range from deep South to nesota. Test these by moving a lighted candle around door frames and window sashes. (Caution: Do this carefully, avoiding curtains and If the flame dances, you need weatherstripping, caulking, or very snug storm windows. Better to have both. Am I heating or cooling the house when nobodys home? Consider clock a installing thermostat ($40 to $90) which you can set to turn down the heat when you leave for work, automatically turn it up shortly before you arrive home. Or when you go to bed and get up. Also works with whole-hous- e .) air con ditioning. 5. Is my hot water tank insulated? Is the temperature on the water' heater set too high? (Most are set ' for 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but a setting of 120 degrees is adequate unless you have a dishwasher.) " New hot water heating tanks' that are t have a"' thick insulation on the shell. There are many other ways to save on the cost of energy at your house, if--, you make a careful study of it. Nows; the time to do so. And while youre at it, you can take comfort in the fact: that you may be saving tax dollars,' too. rr Remember that you can get a federal income tax credit of 15 (up to' a maximum of $300) on the cost of " sulation, weatherstripping, caulking, storm windows and doors, clock thermostats, and certain other energy-savi- ng items to install in your home. Remember, also, that a credit is better than a deduction. A deduction comes off your gross income, but a credit is actually deducted from the tax you would otherwise pay.
