Show m WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 29, 1977 IS Woods Cross nn llll By DAVE W1GHAM The Viewmont football team will attempt to put their act back together this week as they host the Bobcats from Sky View in a 2:30 afternoon game this Friday. The game was moved up because this week is Homecoming week and the dance is scheduled for Friday night. Steve Klem. First, they can do what many high school squads would do, give up. Secondly they can come out fighting and show some character and promise. The Vike squad took the second route. That game is over, the Vikes now face a tough Bobcat squad. True they havent won a league game yet, but both their losses have come at the hands of a couple of tough squads in Roy and Clearfield. : : COACH Jones of Viewmont indicated that the Sky View coach was a coach at Brigham Young in the days of Virgil Carter and that the Cache Valley boys run the same type of offense. They like to line up with a wingback and put him in motion a lot. From that they run the option play and like to flood areas when they throw the ball. Defensively they show a lot of different fronts, very seldom do they run the same D two plays in a row, the Vike mentor noted. The coach went on to say that the Bobcat record isnt the best, but that its misleading in the fact that the Sky View people have lost to some top teams in the area. ON THE sad note the Vikes have lost two of their players for this game, and at least one of them for the year. Tod Jones and Rick Hallows are both sidelined for a while and will be sorely missed by the Vikes. With the option coming at them, the Vikings will need some good efforts out of their defensive ends Doug Day and include a total of 17 offerings. And these include, he said, the spectacular Up With People number with its huge dancing and singing cast of young people of all nationalities, races and ideologies. THE LAVISH production, which plays throughout the world, is booked for the WSC Dee Events Center next Feb. Meanwhile the Bears from Bear River were winning their opener over Woods Cross and then dropping a game to the Ben Lomond 13-- bunch. So on paper it looks like another win for the Darts, as they have a lot of talent in their backfield. EACH year the Darts are tough, then they lose everyone to graduation and then they return new names and remain as tough as ever. This year the new names are Ryan Hill, Mitch Keck, Matt Gregory and Keith Malnar. These are the backs in the now famous Kaysviile wishbone, sometimes called the double win formation. With the glory and the print going to the backs, one must remember the line is responsible for the action. Rick Ray, Brett Shaw, Thor Angle and Dirk Barnes are a few of the people up front making those backs look so good. DEFENSIVELY the Darts have standouts like Brad Hatch, Kevin Riddle, Jeff Starkey, Scott Fletcher and Mike Mounteer to hold off the opponents. Things look rough for the Bear River bunch, but they have some talented people of their own especially their senior linebacker Ted Petersen. In last weeks loss to Ben Lomond this linebacker was credited with around twenty tackles, many of them unassisted. THE BEARS will have to get great performances from their defensive unit especially their backers and defensive This week the Layton Lancers travel up north to battle the Bonneville football squad and the Lancers better be prepared for a tough ball game. Far from it. THE game could turn into a two man duel as two of the best running backs in the area will face each other in THE Bears have only been able to put 9 points on the board on offense but their defense has only allowed 20 so they have a good defensive unit if they can get their offense rolling. The Darts have too many people with too much talent for the Bears. Their defense will be tested throughout the game while their offense will have problems moving against a stubborn Dart D. THE COURSE will be wide open to the public and can be used by families or dividuals without charge. Mr. Knight said it will be challenging enough for those in good condition, and yet an excellent conditioning area for those getting started on an exercise program. in- EIGHTEEN exercise stations are being built along the course. Joggers will be encouraged to stop and utilize as many of the stations as they wish. A set of instructions will be at each station for participants to use. THE COURSE is situated east of Skyline Drive. It begins at a point east of the WSC stadium, and winds northward through heavy oak brush to two retention reservoirs of the Pine View District, then loops back to the starting point. The trail is up and down gentle slopes, with oak brush concealing nearly the entire length of it. WITH UEA going on next week the games have been moved up to the Wednesday meeting. In the first week they dropped a decision to Bear River, then last week they lost a game to the South High 9-- 7 IN THE quarterback spot the Lancers have the edge with senior Ben Bubak turn- ing into one of the finest passers around, the Lakers have a good one in Bart Hodges but the Layton club has the advantage. The passing combination of Bubak to Rick Snow looked almost unstoppable last week against Viewmont and the Lakers will have to shut Snow off. If the defense keys Turner too much then the Lancers go to the air and that means Snow. DEFENSIVELY the two clubs are solid, the Bonneville group held Bountiful to just one score while the Lancers haven't given up a point in league action. The Lakers are led by linebacker Danny Rich one of the best in the region. Rich has turned in two great performances in their opening games but he cant do it all by himself. ALTHOUGH the Lancers loaded with defense stars two names, Sam Gallegos and are Wayne Kittrel stand out, Sammy a small bundle of 21-1- 8 THE Wildcats have come up short on the board, by very little each game, and are very hungry for that first win. Many, including this writer, didnt give the Cats much hope of winning in the league this year but a gutty bunch of players like Gregg Tuttle, Dave Powell, and Stu Egan have definitely made an impression on their op- ponents thus far in league bunch. play. IN FACING the Box Elder squad, at the Woods Cross field, the Cats will face one of the best high school kickers in the area. Dale Money of the Bees has been nothing short of awesome with his kicking this year. Last week against Davis COACH Wally Hawkins and his staff should take a bow for the work that they have done with this group of youngsters. With the entire club returning next year, Im sure the other this side stepping kicker kicked a 51 yard field goal, and thats good for any high school player. He has several other long kicks to his credit but the 51 yarder is his best effort in game situations. THAT puts a lot of pressure on the Wildcat defense in that they know that anytime the Bees get in the oppositions half of the field, they are of putting at least three points on the board. Another name to watch for is quarterback Kline Adams who has moved the ball game effectively this season. capable THEN next week the Cats face one of the best running backs in Ogden tailback Mike dynamite and Wayne a large bundle of dynamite. These two are around the bail on every play. Kicking could play a role in this contest and the Lancers have a good one in sidewinder Jim Smith while the Lakers look to the foot of Steve Wat- coaches arent looking forward to next season with too much enthusiasm. But thats next year, the Cats want to win this year and win they may do. These two games will be uphill battles for the Cats but they have been used to that all year. The Bees are a finesse type team while the Tigers are a very physical outfit who love to hit people. Coarse Work House Party Hostess Very bad form, I call it, to ring me up during church hours."
