Show rr I WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 29, 1977 IS After Two eeGis Otts Laytom, ISM After two weeks of action in league play nothing really surprising has emerged. The two leaders, with 2-- 0 marks, are Layton and Bountiful, both clubs who were supposed to be near the top. VIEWMONT and Roy have each lost one game, each to the leaders and are still in the title picture. Clearfield remained in the title chase by evening their record to with a win this past week. Weber High entered the race with a upset win over Bonneville last week while the Lakers and Sky View clubs are still searching for their first wins. The Lancers and Braves are not only unbeaten but they have both recorded two straight shutouts in their wins. Both clubs got their offenses rolling last week after somewhat slow starts the first week. According to Mr. Fielding, the group plans to hold na Layton. BONNEVILLE, despite tional handball and racquet championships at the sports center. Two of the tennis courts can be converted so that indoor tennis can be viewed by spectators from both sides of the court which is in play. A WEIGHT room, and spa will be built in the basement area. A physical therapist will also be available to serve members of the center, Mr. Fielding said. One hundred and fifty charter memberships are now on sale. THE SPORTS complex, to be built on six acres of land adjacent to the proposed Lay-to- n Braves City Mall, will include tennis, handball and racquet ball courts, as well as an indoor swimming pool. on the Construction complex will begin in the with spring, Could Move Up Football Games To Be Played Early Next Week opening scheduled for the end of the summer of 1978, Mr. Fielding said. said the million He dollar complex will fan out from a central glassed area to include two indoor tennis courts on each side with the racquet ball courts and an all season swimming pool joining the central area on the third side. THE COMPLEX include four indoor tennis courts, six handball racquet ball courts, separate men and womens locker rooms, sauna and steam rooms and a whirlpool. In addition six outdoor tennis courts and platform tennis courts are planned for the complex. Platform tennis, a new sport to the area, is played on a elevated court h the size of a tennis court. The game which calls for an enlarged paddle ball racquet with a hard surface, can be played outside during most of the year. one-fourt- MR. FIELDING said the he said. The most recent theft involved an expensive set of golf clubs and bag. inside the bag were a mans watch and diamond ring, valued at more than $1,000. EARLIER, golf clubs worth more than $800 were stolen from the same course. The latest victim, Dave Smith of Salt Lake City, said he left the golf bag with watch and ring inside the bag outside the pro shop. $1,800 by Rodger Bailey and Rodger Vincent had a good day up in Cache Valley as they did a lot of the damage to the Bobcats in their victory. Both of these lines will also be the main stays on the defense front. AS A sign of things to come, and the way the Falcons are picking up the new system, Clearfield showed some razzle dazzle in their game with Sky View with the halfback pass for a score. In the matchup department the quarterback spot is almost a toss up. If Brian Johnson were 100 percent, then the Falcons would have a slight edge, but with the knee putting him at about 85 percent the edge would definitely have to go to Chris Davies of Bountiful. Chris has a great throwing arm and directs the club the way Paul Waite likes. THE running games are similar in the style of play but the Braves had Bill Wernli, who is a bull type runner Airman Paul C. Baca, son of Mrs. Josephine C. Garcia of 1990 North 1690 West. Lay-to- n, Clearfield has some top runners in Trusell, Wilson and Arrant but none of which are power runners. THE LINES are the key and on past performances the Braves would rate the edge here also. In the receiving department the Falcons have more speed than the Bountiful people, which could give them the edge here. Defense is the order of the day for this battle. The Braves have yet to be scored upon in league action, they have a solid defense led by linebackers Larry Hale, John Hazen and Kent Palmer along with their linemen. CLEARFIELD has given up quite a few points but they also proved in the Idaho Falls game that they can shut out the best of them. Big Bob Berrera, the nose guard, will be one problem for the their record, could be has graduated at Lackland AFB, Texas, from Air Force basic training. Completion of this training earned the individual credits towards an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air e definite factor in the outcome of the region. They cant afford another loss this week and they face Layton, the Lakers will be up for this one. Weber is the up and down squad of the region, who would have thought they would beat Bonneville after their initial showing against Viewmont. The Vikes need to regroup and bounce back after their loss last week to Layton, the Vikes face Sky View in a game they should win. Force. Airman Baca is a 1975 graduate ol Judge Memorial High School, Salt Lake City. His father, L. D. Baca, resides at 163 Geneva Way, East Carbon, Utah. SKY VIEW came into the league as an unknown club and they havent done a thing. They have only scored six points in their first two games and thats not good enough in this region. Over the 3A ranks the Davis team is proving to be as tough as ever, they dont want to give up their claim as state champions. With two impressive wins they look well on their way to a region title. The Ben Lomond people are staying right on the path of the Darts with the same mark. The two schools dont meet until the last game of the season which could very well decide the region title. Ben Lomond has to face their rival Ogden this week. So nothing has changed the rich get richer and the poor get poorer as region football enters its third week. ns 0 JORCinft MINI SCHOOL Braves, the key matchup will be Berrera going head to head with Bountifuls Steve Rudd, a good blocking center. As Roy High found out you cant afford to let the Brave offense have the ball too long, they play solid ball control. Development Corporation MR. FIELDING said the complex is family oriented. The upper floor will include a .nursery and a hair styling salon. Professional instruction will be given in all the sports available at the center. 2-- CLEARFIELD travels up north to battle the up and down Weber team. The Warriors looked bad against Viewmont then bounced back to down Bonneville, so theres no telling which team will show up. If the Falcons lose to Bountiful this week, a win at Weber is a must; if the Clearfield team beats the Braves, then they would have a little breathing room. Davis will take their act into Salt Lake City as they battle the Cubs of South High. The Darts will probably be undefeated going into the game and they should be the same coming out of the contest. Its been a long time since the Cubs have seen the Kaysville Wishbone and that decision to build the sports complex in Layton was made based on the evaluated needs in the location. There was really nothing in the area, the tied with Layton for the league lead with perfect 0 marks while the Falcons have a mark having beaten Sky View and dropping their opener to Layton. Bountiful looked almost unbeatable in defeating the Roy club 19-- 0 last week as the Braves executed to near per- yearly meetings next week, the high school football games have been moved up to Wednesday for next week. All games are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5. ONE OF THE best rivalries in the state will be renewed when the Viewmont Vikings travel across town to battle Bountiful in a night game on the Braves field. Say what you want about the two clubs, how one team is loaded with talent and should walk away, but past history has proven that the records of the two clubs dont matter when they meet. Anything can and probably will happen. Another top game on tap for the Wednesday action is the Roy and Layton matchup. This game could go a long way in determining the finish for the region title. Depending on both their games this Friday, and both should win, the importance of the game will take shape. most people are having to go elsewhere to provide their sporting needs, Mr. Fielding said. This Royal club is going to be near the top of the league at the end of the race. Roy has yet to travel to Layton to battle the Lancers, a crucial game in a couple of weeks. Clearfield is still very much a contender and they could do themselves, and some other clubs, a big favor by beating Bountiful this week at the Falcon field.
