Dennis and family are now living in Mexico City. Mr. and Mrs. Irving Christensen returned from a 10 day vacation trip to Canada. They were accompanied by their two daughters, Mrs. Kaye Kent of Whittier, Calif, and Mrs. Jack Burton of Bountiful. They spent time at Banff National Park and Lake Louise and Waterton National Parks as well as visiting Mrs. Christensens old homestead west of Cardston, Alberta, Canada. They also visited in Calgary where Mr. Christensen was reared and also spent time at their Christensen Family ranch at Twin Buttes in Alberta. Then usually they ask for the dispatcher. When I say, This is the dispatcher, they seem to accept that and we go on with the business at hand. Linda, who began as a deputy at the dispatch center of the sheriffs office on Sept. 1, was hired under a special consideration allowed by the Sheriffs Merit Board. Linda took the merit test in 1975 along with four other women. She passed the written part of the test with a high grade, but the physical test placed her so far down on the merit list, that she was not hired as a deputy that year. IN 1976 SHE took : - . the They got the job. THE MERIT commission met and agreed based on a clause which allows the hiring of a deputy with exceptional qualifications. Linda qualified under the clause requiring exceptional qualifications, based on her experience as a police matron, an investigator and a secretary during her service at the sheriffs office. voice. ' I LINDA SAYS that during the first two weeks of her eight hour shift as dispatcher, there were times when she got rattled when the calls were hectic. Sometimes 1 found myself getting uptight when all the phones were ringing and the radio traffic was heavy. But now after four weeks, Linda has worked the communications center alone several times on a Saturday shift. Linda, like any dispatcher, says that the only way to train for that position is to sit down at the board and start. She says at first, when the traffic was heavy, more experienced dispatchers who were training her jumped in and helped. Lt. Dean Egbert commented during her first 1 think shell be a week, good dispatcher. writ- ten test again, but didnt attempt the physical since she felt there was no use. Linda, who has worked as a secretary and matron in the office I had for four years, said, given up and was going to look for another job when Sheriff Lawrence talked to me about the dispatch center, He went to the merit commission and requested a ALTHOUGH MANY new deputies start in either the jail or the dispatch center, Linda says that she was not Worried about the high cost ol heating your home? fireplace we have the most sensible solution for greatly reducing those costs. During the first week that she dispatched, she worked without a uniform because the supply house doesnt have a good supply of uniforms. Many items of clothing had to be special ordered. The shirts that Linda wears are small mens shirts. Although there was an attempt to tailor the shirts, theyre still a little big, Linda said. With the shirt, Linda wears either slacks, skirts or coulottes. At this point she is still waiting for her gun belt, which has to be modified and therefore is on special order. When the gun belt arrives, Linda will wear a gun. Now she carries the gun in her purse. SHE SAID all the matrons in the sheriffs office have been taught to shoot by the deputies. This is necessary because they are on call to help transport and search female prisoners. Like other deputies, Linda will have to qualify in marksmanship. LINDA SAYS that since she is one of the two female law enforcement officers in Davis If you have a 292-105- take the jail duty. only area I couldnt handle. If two jailers were on duty, it would work, but not for a woman alone. Linda says, although she isnt particularly interested in patrolling, she will do that if assigned. These are not areas that a woman couldnt handle with the proper training, Linda said. required County, sometimes people look strangely at me in the At first her son uniform. Ricky 14, wasnt sure he liked to see his mother in uniform. Linda said Ricky warned her, Dont you wear that when my friends are here, but now after three weeks, his view point has changed. Now hes talking about becoming a cop when he grows up," she said. Linda says her husband, James, has been very supportive, although her family is still adjusting to her working shift work which requires that she work an eight hour shift during any one of the three shifts during a period. She says the shifts are set up differently, but she has yet never been required to work the graveyard shift. SHE GOT into law enforcement work accidently. When I first started, I was just looking for a job as a secretary. Then I got totally immersed in the job and began taking classes on my own simultaneously. She says the pace is fast and the work is exciting and gratifying." She sees her job as an opportunity to help other women break into the law forcement field. en- Linda said, so much potential is being lost because so few women are at work in the law enforcement field. The physical requirements set up by the merit commission, eliminates the hiring of women, making it impossible for them to qualify. Such and physical tests as sit-u- p push-uprunning, obstacle courses, and barrier routines, are some of the tests required. Women must compete with men in the final scoring. When she and the three other women took the physical test in 1975, we did manage to do it. We all passed the test, but not high enough to compete with the men. Lindas name was then placed on the hiring roster at the Davis County Sheriffs office, but was so far down the list that her name was never reached before another roster was set up. She felt she could never have been hired without the exception. The male deputies have been supportive in helping her adjust to her new position. Theyve made a point of encouraging me. Some of their wives have called to congratulate me. Even the public is adjusting to the female voice that comes froms the dispatch center, Linda" said. ."After the pause, they say, Oh a woman, huh? and go ahead with the problem.
