Show -- r WEEKLY REF LEA- - jOL : L, SEPTEMBER i5, 1977 Darts Drop To Football Race Taking Shape By DAVE UIGHAM With two practice games under their belts the high schools now get down to business with the task of winning a region crown and even more gaining an invitation into the state tournaments at the conclusion of the season. BASED ON their past performances in the two races for previous games this is how see the those state berths. In the new Region One the team to beat would have to be the Bountiful squad. First they beat a highly respected Brighton team then they downed the always tough Davis squad. The Braves have jelled well for the earliness of the season and they have nowhere to go but 1 up. THEN COMES the real dog fight for that second invitation to Rice Stadium in November. Three squads have good shots at it, and first place, in Layton, Clearfield and Roy. The Lancers and Royals were picks to finish in front of Bountiful but both have struggled in the early going. Layton didnt look as polished against Davis as did the Braves, but did improve in whipping a solid West crew. The Royals dropped their opener to Skyline, no disgrace in that, but they looked unimpressive against Ben Lomond. The Falcons are still unknown at this time, new coach Brent Hancock has his troops rolling and this weeks game with Layton will go a long way in telling what kind of season the Falcons will have. pre-seaso- n i SKY VIEW could be the surprise the league. The Bobcats lost a narrow game to West and then shut out and beat their rival Logan. The Bobcats get tested early as they take on the Roy squad this week. Over in Region Four one would have to go with Davis even though they havent won a game yet this season. In both their games, with Layton and Bountiful, the Darts have shown that they have plenty of talent m their fold and are the team to beat. They are the defending state of champions and until someone beats them they stay number one. THEN THE fight of the second state spot seems to be between Ben Lomond, Bear River, South and Ogden. The Scots lost a contest to the bigger Roy squad so they should be considered m the top area. Bear River has a lot of talent up north and South will be competitive in their new region. Ogden has always been a rough team in the 4A ranks and their move to 3A can do nothing but help 6 their program. So there you have it. Bountiful and Davis at the top with the others chasing. Remember thats just one persons thinking, and the championships are won on the field not on paper. Braves Two Kyle McKay touchdown runs coupled with a Chris Davies to Scott Pendleton touchdown bomb lifted the Bountiful Braves to a hard-fougwin over the persistent Davis Darts. 21-- 7 BOTH teams had high hopes going into Friday nights game: Davis to maintain its supremacy over Bountiful and the Braves to avenge last year's loss. Bountiful opened the scoring early when Kyle McKay, Bountiful studentbody president and nephew of Utah Congressman Gunn McKay, powered around right end for a 51 yard touchdown run. The PAT was wide left and Bountiful assumed a 0 advantage. 6-- TOP WINNER ON THEIR next possession Bountiful quarterback Davies lofted a 40 yard pass to receiver Scott Pendleton to the Dart 10 yard-linOn the ,J next play McKay sped around left end to score. A two-poi- conversion increased the Bountiful lead to 15-- as the teams separated for halftime. Bountiful stopped Mitch Keck short of the goal on fourth down after the teams resumed play in the third quarter but was unable to get out of the hole when McKay fumbled and Davis recovered on the 30 yard-line- . QUICKLY Ryan Hill connected with a 10 yard scoring pass to tall Troy Howard to put the Darts on the scoreboard. Hill methodically split the uprights to make it 14-- But the comeback was stifled when, on the next Bountiful possession, Davies threw a 50 yard bomb over the outstretched arms of Jeff Starkey and into the hands of Pendleton who scampered the remaining 10 yards to the goal. Years ago when the high schools had the same enrollment the Ogden club could compete with anyone, but over the years the Tigers have seen their studentbody slowly diminish while others were building up. In an effort to be more competitive with schools of their own size the Tigers asked and received for permission to play in the 3A ranks. That doesnt mean the Tigers will be instant winners in their new region but at least they are playing against schools with the same enrollment. 825-748- 4 123 Cross St., Layton they seemed to have a against the Braves Where glass is a specialty--no- t a sideline" n ONE OF the problems the Tigers have is being new to the double wing offense of the Darts.
