Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. SEPTEMBER 15, 1977 Bountiful Sets For Bonneville By DAVE WIGHAM Look out Bonneville, the Braves from Bountiful seem to be getting better every game they play. First the Braves beat a highly touted Brighton club then they By DAVE WIGHAM downed 3A power Davis to remain unbeaten through the This column isnt pointing a finger at anyone, or saying that someone made a mistake. Its just a writer thinking out loud about a certain subject. n. BONNEVILLE is also yet to be beat. First they downed Ogden and then Green River THE THING is the time of day that the high school iootball games are scheduled for. Take for instance the Viewmont game last week. The game time was 4: 30 in the afternoon. With that time slot the students have been out of school almost two hours. The new school schedule has the students out at 2: 40. The students get to go home or mess around for two hours and then come back to the school for a game. High in Wyoming, both good wins but at the hands of two clubs that arent anywhere near the caliber of the Braves. One problem for the Bountiful people will be the Lakers premiere runningback, Jerry Amidan. This senior speedster is considered one of the best in the state this year. Up in the Wyoming game he played the first half only raking up over 200 yards on offense. His speed is a IF THEY want the students to attend the game, it would seem logical to have the game time moved up so they could just go straight to the game instead of having a couple of hours to kill. One reason might be to get some of the parents to the game. If their thinking is to move the game back in an effort to get the adults at the game why dont they put it way back. definite concern for the coaches at Bountiful, they are aware of it and are gearing the players towards stopping it. Coach, Deloy Archibald, who was coach of the Little League Baseball team sponsored by the Barnes Banking Company of Kaysville, is pleased with the accomplishments of his team the past season. This outstanding team of boys tied for second place in the Kaysville Little League play this summer and then went on to win the championship in the Little League Tournament by defeating Clinton, also Kaysville Clover Club first place team and also the Syracuse team. One of the most exciting games they played during the season was played the evening of Aug. 19 when the team challenged their fathers to a hard fought game followed by a presentation of trophies and a pot luck supper at the park. The teams record for the year was 12 wins and four losses. Assistant coaches are Grant Carlson and Dick Strong. LITTLE LEAGUE ALL THEY would have to do is install lights at the schools like the Bountiful set up. Why not? BOUNTIFUL doesnt take a back seat to anyone when it comes to runmngbacks. Halfback Kyle McKay gained 123 With lights at Viewmont, or any other school in the county, all the parents could get to the games if they wanted to. Not only could the football programs benefit from this move, but also the soccer team could play some night games, as does the Bountiful team. yards against Davis while fullback Bill Wernli picked up another 83. These two, along with John Luddington and Mike Krammer, give the Braces a potent running attack. But just when you figure youve stopped their running game the Braves come up throwing. Quarterback Chris Davies would have to be rated one of the top signal callers in the region, if not the best, he does it all, runs, throws and is a great leader. IF THEY are after just the student attendance to keep up, then they should move the time up to fit them. If they want the parents to come, then they are used to night games, so get some lights. another good runner in Mitch Godfrey, quarterback Bart Hodges is a southpaw who has a good arm. The game is definitely no for the Braces, but give-m- e they will be favored going into the game. Bountiful has too has met the Lakers a couple of times in state tournaments when Brent Hancock, now at Clearfield, was the coach and the Braves had good success against them. Coach Tom Budge calls his Laker club an aggressive one. The strength of this club would be its quickness, aggressiveness and good depth." The Bonneville club returns several of their top defensive players from the club that placed second to Roy in the region last season. BOUNTIFUL By DAVE WIGHAM The fun is over, if fun is n footwhat you call ball games against powers like Skyline and East. This week the Viewmont Vikings play their first ever Region One football contest as they host the Weber folks. CERTAINLY the fact that a team has lost both games, go- ing into the game doesnt exactly please the coaching staff, but they needn't push the panic button because those two games mean absolutely nothing in league standings. In their two games the Vikings have failed to score a single point although they have had their chances. Against the Skyline club the Vikes had the ball inside their opponents twenty yard line for most of the first quarter. At one point the Vikings had a fourth and two situation on line but a the Eagle pass was knocked down by a defensive end. ONE OF the problems the Vikes have faced is that they get behind on the score board and they have to throw the ball to catch up and their opponents know this and just sit back and wait. Against the Weber squad the Vikes have a shot at getting ahead in the game and playing ball control. They have a couple of excellent running backs in Tod Jones and Joe both have shown signs of talent. Quarterbacking the squad is senior veteran Kevin Hess, a tall signal caller who started every game last year as a junior. He has some good receivers in Tim Egan, Shane Smoot and Steve Neilsen, but has not had all the time he needs to set up. At times the line gives him all day to throw and then other times the opposition is back waiting for him. WEBER comes to the game with a top running back of their own in fullback Jay Shupe. In the old Region One last year this big back won honors as a junior and is back bigger and better question mark for the Vikes. They were embarrassed by Skyline. Time after time the Eagles were able to riddle the Vike secondary for either the long or the short pass. Coaches will be working all this week on patching up that aspect of the game. n than ever. Another Warrior that won the same honor last year as a junior is defensive back Dale Stone. Defensive backs are still a WEBER HAS won both their games, against Highland of Salt Lake City and Ogden, both res'pectable clubs but neither in the power house category. Information has not been received from Weber Basin to make the monthly report, but based on the amount of water that has been put into the culinary water system, it would seem that residents think that the drouth problem is over. RESIDENTS should look at the reservoirs east of the city and also Pine View reservoir. These reservoirs are not the source of culina.7 water but reflect the effects of the drouth. Everyone should take a look at the reservoirs in the Weber Valley, Wanship, Echo and East Canyon reservoirs. The city officials are sure that the residents would realize the problems they face ahead. The water table has dropped to a been a major role in the Weber wins and they have a good one in Kurt Stauffer. The game is being played on the Viking field which should be a plus for them. The Vikes have played tougher clubs in the games n which could also be a plus for them. Although the Vikes have been unimpressive in their first two games they are hungry and due for a win.
