In the afternoon matchup with Layton and Skyline going head to head, the Lancers opened some peoples eyes to the northern part of the state. this was the play of West and example Viewmont. The Panthers came in as a fifth place team, one who was supposed to play two games and go home. and eventually a sixth They made it to the semi-finaplace finish. The Vikings came in as the champion from the region and in a good bracket with a chance to make the finals. Looking ahead to next year as far as teams who were in the tournament, the best choice for returning would be Highland. Coach Maxwell has a young club which includes a couple of sophomores. The coachs son, Mike Maxwell, is one of the better guards in the state and hes only a sophomore. In the tournament the Vikes downed Bountiful 15-- nipped beat Cotton Ben Lomond 0, 6-- Clearfield, who entered the tournament as the third place team from the region, finished highest of all Region Two teams, with a seventh place finish in the State 4A Basketball tournament. 5-- 3 VIEWMONT almost lost their encounter with the Cottonwood squad, as they tied the score with only 18 seconds left in the game. Then with only 40 seconds gone in the overtime the Vikes scored to take the win. Members of this undefeated State championship team are Ynchausti, Randy goalie defensive players were J.C. Ynchausti, Dave Whipple, Kevin Albrechtsen and Pat Fiegleson. FORWARDS on the team were Wayne Jameson, Kevin Jessop, John Cook, Bobby Shegrud, Mike Charlesworth and Rock Cook. Another member who played a major role in the regular season action, but was unable to play in the tournament due to a broken leg, was Jeff Turner. Of this squad only Dave Whipple and Kevin Jessop will graduate, the rest will be back for more next year. IN THEIR opening round game, the Falcons downed a stubborn Skyview club. The next night the Clearfield five were downed by Provo n in a game. 18-1- 1 slow-dow- Their third game, the Falcons beat Layton, getting sweet revenge for two previous defeats to the Lancers. In their final game the Falcons lost to Brighton in the battle of the brothers. IN THAT game the brothers were the coaches, Roger and Duke Reid.
