Show Page Two - The Pyramid - July 22. 1998 Young drivers need more supervision, trooper says Dear Editor: Merrill Ogden Mormons are crazy Those who read the Salt Lake Tribune are probably familiar with the name, Robert Kirby. Hes the humor columnist who has a piece in the "Trib" three times a week. As far as I can determine, Robert makes a living by poking fun at Mormons and the "Mormon culture". He has experience with his subject matter. He served an LDS Mission to Uruguay. I gather that he lives in Spring-vill- e and is currently in a bishopric. (He had to break the news to one of his letter writing critics who hadnt made the connection as to who he was and that he was in her ward bishopric. She had accused him of not understanding the Mormon point of view on things.) "His position seems to be "that it takes one to know one, and I am one. " Over the weekend, I had occasion to hear Kirby as an after dinner speaker. He gave an entertaining speech. If I remember right, his talk was titled "Mormons are Crazy... And So Is Everyone Else". He is first and last a humorist. He gets big laughs by spoofing and parodying life in Utah. But as you know, there is often "truth in jest". Some insightful observations were made on life in Utah. He made a point or two the other night which could provoke some thought among us in Sanpete. He asked how many of the audience were Mormons. About half of the crowd raised their hands. (He didnt ask for a show of hands of "Jack Mormons.) He pointed out that FOR SALE Fairview Heights, five bedroom, three bath home on one acre, beautifully landscaped yard, lots of storage, shed, oversized ga- rage, weight room and many extras. That brought a roar of laughter. An experience was related about a conversation that Robert had with a Utah newcomer who had lived in many different areas of the country. She wondered why it was that she was more lonely in Utah than anywhere else she had lived. Robert speculated an answer for her which centered on attempting to understand what he described as UtahIdaho Mormon culture. First of all, he explained, that the Mormons have a load of church obligations that "would cripple a Grand Canyon mule". The church keeps them busy to keep them out of trouble. Next, you have to forgive many Mormons for having forgotten how to deal socially with people who dont believe and live just like they do. They have lived on their own for so long that they dont know any different. Interacting with a often takes the Mormon out of their comfort zone. Perhaps we in Sanpete need to pause and consider this concept. I believe that Sanpete is a happy, friendly place. There arent enough people here to exclude anyone from our circle of friends based on anything like religion, race or political affiliations. If anything is going to divide us, its going to be the "big" issues like controversial calls at home plate in little league games and someones dog barking at night. To paraphrase Robert Kirby, "Some things make about as much sense as a kamikaze pilot wearing a helmet. "....Merrill Medications are designed for children SALT LAKE CIT- Y- Drug manufacturers are finally making a push to design medications especially for children, according to BlueCross BlueShield press release. Until recently, doctors had to play guessing games when prescribing adult drugs to their smaller patients. This year, there are 187 childrens medications awaiting government testing or approval, a 28 percent increase over last year. Heart of Utah Antiques 146 West Main, Mt. I think if we adopt some of these ideas in Utah, our young people would be much better drivers. This would benefit us with savings in medical costs and insurance costs. The bottom line is that our young drivers need more time behind the wheel with some limitations to make them better drivers. Trooper Terry C. Since 1996, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio, have adopted programs that include essential elements of graduated licensing. I believe it would be of great benefit if the citizens of Utah would contact their legislators and senators to back a graduated license system here. PLEASAN- T- Edith Ellswood got into historic home renovation a bit later than most. She was 66 years old when she bought her home at 285 South 300 West in Mt. Pleasant, but something about the adobe brick house, believed to be 100 years old, appealed to her. Sure, one corner of the building looked like it was falling down and all of the plumbing and wiring would have to be replaced. "..but it caught my eye; I thought it had character, even though it was run down and would need fixing up," she says. That was 22 years ago. Ellswood, who turns 87 soon, loves her house and is still working on getting it just right. She gets some help from her son, and two daughters who live in the area. "Now they say my job is the weeder. They do most of the other work," she explains. The house, which sits on nearly half an acre, was once surrounded by weeds. There were only two trees on the lot. Now, it is shaded by trees that Ellswood Published Weekely at Mt. The council hopes to help people interested in historic projects apply for tax credits, There is no doubt that the first years teenagers spend as drivers are risky and at times, down-rigscary. Young drivers have the highest death rate, which has increased from 19 deaths per 100,000 licensed drivers in 1975, to 35 deaths per 100,000 licensed drivers in 1996, for both male and female drivers. Since the mid 1980s, the death rate among has been higher and this gap is widening. I think the main reason is that our young people do not get the experience that they need, to be good, safe drivers. I remember driving hay trucks in the fields, sometimes standing in the seat to see over the hood. I spent years driving farm equipment before I received a drivers license. It would be easy to blame the drivers education programs, but research shows that drivers education doesnt affect the crash experience of beginning drivers. I tend to think that what they need is more time behind the wheel with supervision and less circumtime driving in high-ris- k stances, at night for example. , A promising way to reduce deaths among drivers is to adopt a graduated licensing system that phases in driving WATER WATER Household well permit water rights available In Northern Sanpete County-Ephraito Fairview or m Ephraim to Fountain Green.
