I have a friend who has had a nephew from the Salt Lake City area living with his family. Now that school is out, the nephew has gone back to Salt lake. I asked how the young man was doing the other day. I was told that he phones all the time. He says hes bored and wishes that he were back in Sanpete. Now theres an improbably situation in the minds of many people. Bored i Salt Lake and wishing for Sanpete! Whod have thought? To those of us who live here this is not a surprise. There is a great deal to do in Sanpete. As I continue to point out in this space, sometimes theres too much to do. On a proportionate basis, Sanpeters are probably some of the most busy and "doing" people in the state. We are "doers." The diversity of opportunities here is tremendous. A mention of some doings this past weekend give an example of what I mean. Saturday was free fishing day in Utah. For those without licenses, it was a day to drown a worm without having to evade the fish cop. State Parks also were not charging entry fees Saturday. ..Sanpete had a rodeo at the fairgrounds Saturday night. It wasnt particularly well attended, but the crowd made plenty of noise during the mutton busting part of the evening (mostly . screaming parents hoping that their family medical plan coverages were paid current). Whether you live in Salt Lake or Sanpete, Sunday night was NBA basketball on TV. The Jazz at Chicago for game 3 was anticipated by all of Utah. Our anticipation was rewarded by a Jazz game that stunk worse than any Sanpete turkey ranch or feed lot ever did. I blame myself though for the record breaking loss. I forgot to put on my lucky socks. The good news Sunday night was that I could bail out of the Jazz game in the fourth quarter and find solace at the Snow Urcnestra concen. College How many Salt Lakers were able to duplicate that strategy? The free concert at 8 p.m. in the Crane Theater has perhaps a 70 percent capacity audience. Unlike the Jazz, the talented college musicians were all "on the same page," playing in tune with each other, and following their "coach" with exactness. Their precision and concentration produced a musical event right here in Sanpete that could be put on the stage anywhere without fear of being thought of as second rate. It was a delight to be entertained by Edvard Greigs at Troldhaugen." "Wedding stint in During my two-yeNorway years ago, I lived in Bergen just up the road from Troldhaugen. I visited the Greig home museum and grounds several times. During the performance of the piece, I closed my eyes and "revisited" the gorgeous Scandinavian scenery which the music evoked in my mind. Mendelssohns "Symphony 5" was also done very well. It was especially appropriate for the Sunday night concert with its "A Mighty Fortress is our God" melodies. Musical director Dennis Hansen and the rest of the music department deserve our congratulations for another great year at Snow. Well, as you can see, if you didnt already know; theres no reason to be bored in Sanpete. If you do have some time on your hands and are looking for a place to be of service. I have a suggestion. The Manti Pageant preparations are in full swing. Rehearsals have begun. But, last I heard there is still need for more folks to help in supporting cast sports and other aspects of the production. Dont be shy about volunteering. Ill see you around Sanpete. Dont forget to send positive thoughts to the United Center Get Bull, (No tonight. Jazzed)... Merrill ar 835-215- 283-437- 6.
