Show The Pyramid Page Eight April 23, Badgers suffer weekend 1986 Hawks blast Delta The North Sanpete MORONI Hawk baseball team is now 3 and 1 in league play as they defeated Delta last Tuesday 13-- 1 and Juab on Friday Delta was stunned by the Hawks superior batting. The Hawks led at the end of the first inning Delta and added another six runs in thq second. Delta managed one run in the bottom of the third inning and was held scoreless for the rest of the game. Sanpete added two more runs off of a home run by Daren Walker in the fifth inning. 6-- 5-- 0 Lady Badgers take championship Pitchers Cami EPHRAIM Pollard and Melissa Lovendahl led the Snow College womens softball team to the championship of the Sierra College Wolverine Classic in Roseville, Calif, this past weekend. The Lady Badgers won five of six double beating games in the elimination tourney, American River College 3 in the final game. Snow opened with a 0 win over Merced, with sophomore Pollard throwing the shutout. Snow then with took Butte College Lovendahl pitching and scoring two RBIs on a double, and followed with win over American River with a Snow Pollard. In the semi-final- s trounced Fresno 4 with 14 hits to Fresnos 5. American River sneaked into thhe championship through the losers bracket, and downed Snow in game number one Snow had nine hits to ARCS four, but Pollard struggled in the first inning and giving up four runs. The Snow loss forced a championship game, and freshman Lovendahl gave up only three hits in win. the Snow placed five players on the team: both pitchers; Carolyn Downey, shortstop from Benjamin; Trish Trotter, second base from Orem; and Mildred Calerwood, centerfield from North 8-- 4-- 7-- 4, 2-- 1 8-- 4-- There were Speakman and Snow College dropped from Number 1 in the ICAC after two disastrous losses to the previously winless Dixie Rebels in a Friday afternoon doubleheader in St. George. in league play, scored Dixie, three runs in the bottom of the last inning in game one for a 5 0-- 6 6-- pitched till the final inning, when Bret Cherry was called in for relief. Jog-a-tho- With the return of and debate speech Colleges team from the National Forensics Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, a successful year of debate competition ended, stated President Steven Bennion. For most of this year, Snows speech squad has been ranked number one or two among all junior colleges in the nation by the Cross EPHRAIM Snow n Examination Debate Association (CEDA), Dr. Bennion said. In this weeks final awards presentation, Snow College was named as the second place junior college in the country by this prestigious organization, made up of 334 junior and senior college to raise funds for athletics representatives. At the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament, held this past week in Omaha, Snow came away with said Rick national honors, Wheeler, Snows Forensics Coach. MT. PLEASAN- T- The five-mil- e n scheduled North Sanpete for May 1 will take a route from the Mt. Pleasant power plant to the New North Sanpete High School according to John Ericksen, spokesman. The fundraiser, organized to raise money for North Sanpetes athletic program, is open to elementary age joggers from fourth grade to those over 40. Jim Thatcher, an Ephraim native, son of Mrs. Elda Thatcher, received one of the National Tournaments awards as Outstanding Speaker by winning one gold, one silver and one bronze award. Not only did Snows students receive national honors, but Rick Wheeler, Director of Forensics, was Collie-Taylo- r the awarded the national Award at Fellowship tournament as Outstanding Coach of the Year, President Bennion announced. This award was especially important and meaningful to Rick because it was voted on by all of the coaches and competitors across the United States, the president said, and Coach Wheeler was himself a star debator at Snow several years back. n Ericksen said a minimum pledge off-roa- d required for all participating. Prizes will be given to both men and women in each age class, fourth and fifth grades; middle school age; high school age; those years of age; years of age; and 40 and older. He went on to fill a mission to Eastern Canada for the LDS Church and to graduate from Utah State University and the University of Southern California. He spent the next years working for Safeway and lived in Salt Lake City, Omaha, Neb., Oakland, Calif, and in 1983 moved to Spokane where the Porter family lived before coming back to Sanpete. While with Safeway Michael was a personnel supervisor and worked in the companys management porgram. Sanpete residents will remember 'Michael as an artist and a person interested in music. He still enjoys both and also enjoys all sports. He especially likes water colors. Michael has also been active in the LDS Church and served as counselor in the bishopric and as bishop. He also served as a stake mission president and varsity scout leader. Michael says the callings he has enjoyed most are working with young people. His wife Sherry is formerly from Moab. She has a degree from the University of Utah and is a registered physical therapist. Snow is still in contention in the conference race, but they cant afford any more losses. The Badgers travel to Price Friday and Rangely, Colorado on Saturday for conference games wiith CEU and CNCC. Deltas lead off batter in the first inning tried to stretch a double into a triple and was picked off on a play from Paul Bailey in center field to cut-of- f man David Ramsay and then to Shawn Osborne, third baseman. Steve Slack, Daren Walker and Shawn Osborne combined to pfek off a scoring runner between third and home. Then Daren Walker, who was pitching, threw a stinger to David Ramsay at second base to pick off a runner who led off the base too far. Juab was surprised for the second time this season as they came into Hawk territory. Because of fine pitching by Jared Speakman and good team defensive play, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Juab unleashed and scored three runs. The Hawks had their own streak in the bottom of the fifth and scored five runs off of a walk by Paul Bailey; single and RBI by Fernando Nielsen; single from David Ramsay; triple and RBI from Daren Walker and a grounder by Jared Speakman that also scored a run. The game winning RBI was a single by David Ramsay which scored Fernando Nielsen. Daren Walker came in and pitched well to finish off the last three innings. The Hawks traveled to Lehi on Saturday for a practice game. Nearly everyone on the team saw action. The coaches felt that the team was successful because of the experience that many of the younger boys received even though the team was defeated.
