Coach Andersen takes basketball helm at Sno EPHRAIM Larry Andersen, head coach for the North Sanpete Hawks for the past three years, has been chosen as head basketball coach at Snow College according to President Steven Bennion. Coach Andersen who coached the Hawks to a 1 season this year suc 9-- ceeds Ron Abegglen who resigned last month. Concerning the loss of his second head coach at the high school this spring, Supt. Harold Johnson said he was sorry to have Coach Andersen leave because he has done a marvelous job for our young peo ple, our community and for our school, but we wish him every success as he advances in his career at Snow College. He said the district would begin seeking a replacevigorously ment. The district is also seeking a replacement attending Logan High School he was a successful athlete in golf and basketball. He then played at Western Wyoming College and later at Southern Utah State where he was a starting guard for the Thunder-bird- s. He returned to Logan and graduated from Utah State University in 1975. Basketball has always been a part of Coach Andersens life, and since childhood he has been involved with the sport through his father, LaDell Andersen, who is now head coach at Brigham Young University. Were excited about Larry, and know that he has the talents to continue the winning tradition at Snow, commented Athletic Director Bob Trythall. Coach, Paul Tidwell, who resigned in April to become defensive coach for the Badgers. The superintendent said several prospects have applied and been interviewed but that the board has not yet made a decision. Coach Andersen began his for head football coaching career at Wayne High School in Bicknell where he helped take them to their first state tournament appearance in 44 years. He then moved to Preston High School in Idaho where he coached two seasons before moving to Mt. Plea- sant where he has coached since 1981. This year, Andersen, 32, established a 1 league record and last season was selected Coach of the Year in Region 10. Andersen grew up in Logan. Those participaUng and qualifying for state competition in the event are, front row from left, Lynn Rees, who has been the number one singles at North Sanpete since his Sophomore year; Todd Jackson, third singles in most of the league matches this year; and Scott Schultz, number two singles for the past two years. Kirt Beck and David Benge have played number two doubles' all year. Beck and Benge have been very dedicated in trying to improve their tennis skills and it has payed off for them in the Region Tourney. They finished in second place in the 2nd doubles, losing to Manti in the finals. They met Taylor Lay and Daryl Friant from South Sevier, winning 4 in the first round. In probably the best match of the day, Beck and Benge defeated a very good Grand 6 in the County Team semifinals. A total of nine teams participated in the Tourney including North Sanpete, Manti, Juab, Delta, Richfield, South Sevier, Grand County High School, Dixie, and Pine View. Manti placed first with Pine View second. North Sanpete fielded a team consisting of Lynn Rees, 1st singles, Scott Schulze, 2nd singles, Todd Jackson, 3rd singles, Pat Nelson and Craig Clark, 1st doubles, and Kirt Back and David Benge, 2nd doubles. These players have been consistant all year long in finishing league play with only one loss to Manti. Rees has been the number one singles at North Sanpete since his sophomore year. This year Reess league record was three wins and two loses. He finished in third place at the Richfield Invitational and was beaten in the semifinals at the Snow College Invitational. Rees has probaby been the most consistant player on the Hawk team even though the competition level in the region has increased dramatically this year.
