Show Page Sixteen The Pyramid 1983 May 26, Massive slide creates flash flood in Twelve Mile Canyon A five mile long MAYFIELD slide which observers say makes the one at Thistle look like a mud hill in comparison roared down Twelve Mile Creek east of Mayfield Saturday night clogging the canyon and backing up several small creeks. County Emergency Services Director Wally Buchanan said the slide created a flash flood which wrecked a campground and forced a couple to flee for their lives. Officials urge Keep away from ditches Citizens MT. PLEASAN- Tshould hot panic stated city officials at a special meeting last week to make preparations in the event would create heavy spring run-of- f flooding problems. The greatest concern they said was for property damage from high water, and danger to children who might fall into creek channels or irrigation ditches. Mt. Pleasant had two drownings last year, Mayor Deuel reported, and urged parents to keep their children away from the water. Councilman Allen Shelley indicated that although the potential for flash flooding always exists, the biggest anticipated problem will be from high water which comes over a number of hours rather than from a flash flood. Water master, David Peterson o estimated this years be approximately 250 percent of normal, but that the condition of the flood channel and dams indicated for the most part there should be no trouble. He reported that the speed which the snow melts will determine the severity of the problems. Police Chief John Christensen, the citys disaster preparedness officer, outlined the measures which have been taken to minimize property He has made damage. arrangements to activate townspeople in the event there is a need for sandbagging. Christensen said 2000 sandbags are available for use should the need run-off-t- Couple flee 67 of Dale Faatz, Mayfield said he and his wife were driving into the canyon about five miles east of Mayfield Sunday when they saw a 25 foot wall of water coming at them. He said rocks started rolling, and pine trees cracking, and when his wife saw the wall of water, he turned the pickup around and sped down the dirt road hoping to outrun the water. Faatz told reporters he realized he could not make it so he turned off the road and up a hillside, his pickup spinning and sliding in the loose earth as waters, boulders and uprooted trees swept by them. Just a few minutes later and wed have been in the whole thing, he said. We were just real darn lucky to get out. The couple left their vehicle on the hillside and hiked out of the canyon. More flash floods Buchanan said more flash floods are expected but he does not believe there is any serious threat to the town of Mayfield. Several residents living near the creek have sandbagged their homes, however. Buchanan said Monday as officials were inspecting the damage to the campground three miles below the mud slide, another flash flood descended on them. He said e sound of the they heard a water coming and ran for high jet-lik- ground and admitted the situation was scary. Other Sanpete slides Twelve Mile Canyon was not the only Sanpete Canyon with a slide. Five others along the west slope of the Manti LaSal mountains suffered slides this past week. Continuing mud slides have been a problem in Fairview constant Canyon for Department of Transportation workers trying to keep 1 open across the mountain. Farther to the south a slide in Mt. Pleasant Canyon was also moving on Monday and Ephraim and Manti Canyons also had slide problems. Because of combined hazards of high water, rolling rocks, earth flows, and road washouts, the Sanpete Ranger District of Manti LaSal National Forest is advising people to stay out of the canyons for two to three weeks until the soil has a chance to dry out and firm up. While mud slides continued to plague the area already cut off from northern Utah by the Thistle slide which started April 13, Sanpete kept a watchful eye to the west in Nephis Salt Creek Canyon. The bridge was threatened earlier by rising waters and with temperatures rising drastically the past few days, the run-of- f could still be a threat. If the bridge does not hold, traffic from Sanpete would have to go south through Gunnison to reach the northern part of the state.
