Show The Tame Lancers Falcons, Opposition Darts, confident as they all have all year. "We stopped a hot shooting Roy the first basket, the Darts began a hot shooting streak that became so intense that even a major winter storm couldnt keep snow on the top of the Sam Morgan Fieldhouse.. FOLKS, THOSE Darts were hot and explosive. As it ended, David blew out the 0 and upped visiting Wildcats their league mark to 1 and are now in a two-wa- y tie with the Bountiful Braves for first place in Region Four. THIS WEEK the Darts will travel to play Fast High in Salt Lake City. Davis led 22-- 8 after one quarter which was spurred on a great deal breakout. by a fast THE DARTS were putting the game away in the second period as at one point they got up 40-1- 5 and 1 at halftime. After three Davis had a 66-4- 3 lead but were once ahead in that team and having played Bonneville so close last time, why not get after them and put a win in the column, said Laytons veteran head coach. The last time Layton played Bonneville, the Lancers pretty much controlled Mike Watson, the Lakers big man but they let loose Webber and Stephenson at the same time which were a couple who killed the Lancers. 91-7- 4-- HOPEFULLY we learned what we did wrong and can take care of ourselves this time around, said Moon. 8-- 0 Clearfield Squeezes By Bees, 64-6- 2 42-2- eight-minut- stretch, e 64-3- THE DARTS outscored Woods Cross 10-- 2 to start the fourth and once up by 31 points, Gardner pulled his tigers off and the team coasted to the win. F'or the evening Davis shot just over from the field which was incredible when you investigate the number of missed shots in the final quarter when Davis substitutes filled in. Mike Gardner also had to be pleased ab- a starting five Mike Gardner has ever had. Left to right, David Kinard, Brent Meier, Casey Lloyd, Mike Taylor and Scott Moon. Its as cohesive - CLEARFIELD The Falcon basketball team has realized by now that Troy Markham wont be with them anymore. No matter how hard it seems to believe that, they accept it now. nt nt out freethrowing shooting. In the third quarter alone, Davis shot from the nt nt field. And while all this hot stuff was boiling over, W'oods Cross could manage only from the field in shooting. IT WAS a supreme effort by the starting five. Casey Lloyd netted 26 points in 12 of 17 field shooting. During a second quarter stretch he hit 3 straight 25 footers and tipped in a bucket on an offensive rebound. Woods Cross Clyde Jack-so- n shook his head in unbelief when Lloyd once had five hands in his face but rose up and hit nothing but net from 20 feet out. Mike Taylor grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 15 points in another back to back great effort. Kinard dished out 10 assists. Meier, despite early foul trouble, came back in the third to hit three straight outside jumper to stuff out a mild Cat rally. Scott Moon went 8 for from the field and 2 for 2 from the line for 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds just as well. 1 1 1 THIS STARTING five played the entire first quarter without a substitution and it wasnt until 6:33 in the second before Gardner replaced Meier with sophomore Jeff Pearson. It was finally at the 2:03 mark in the first half that Gardner finally began resting the rest of the starters. People saw it, its hard to take (the starters) em out. There are some good individual players out there but they love to play as a team. ITS ONE of the funnest teams ever coached mainly be- Ive cause they work so hard in prasaid the veteran head ctice, mentor. About Lloyd's impressive performance, Gardner stated, When Casey squares up with the basket hes almost unstoppable. He wasn't off balance tonight. ASSISTANT coach John RobTheres a chemistry ison stated. here that is just plain fun to watch as it develops. The kids love to play with one another. If someone has a hot hand, the ball is always in his hand." Robison said everything that is taking place at present is indicative of Gardner's philosophy of team play." We never go into a game where we are always trying to get the ball into just one individual. Certainly there are times where plays are designed to go to one player for one reason or another, but very seldom does that kind of thing prevail over team play. The assistant coach, who takes a lot of pride in the defensive part of game, had a comment about the 91 points. I was so involved in the defensive scheme of things that once I did look up at the scoreboard and found we had points, I almost asked Coach (Russell) Zaugg to get up and check to make sure the score was right. I'd lost track," he said. s 5 Region Champs Dont Journal Sports - With five reCLEARFIELD gion champions and four others who take second place, you'd be- lieve with that alone a region wrestling championship was in the bag, at least Clearfield's Scott Tennis thought itd be enough. BUT BELIEVE or not. Box Elder found enough to outpace that and staked claim to their 12th consecutive high school region wrestling championship and second straight since coming over to Region One in The Bees piled up 186 points to Clearfield's 181 to win the 1985 Region One Wrestling Championships held in Brigham City last 4-- Thursday. THE CLEARFIELD coach and his club who beat the Bees for the second straight year in a dual competition, were confident yet re- spectful when heading into the meet. After we got nine kids into the finals, I thought we had a shot at it because Box Elder only had seven there. But they came out on top and we have to live with it. But I will say this. I love this team and the sacrifices theyve demonstrated this year. They have nothing to hang their heads about. Box Elder has a super team this year and a great tradition. We tried our hardest to beat them and just because we didnt doesn't mean I think any less of our kids. I love em and thats all there is to it, said Tennis. ELEVEN kids from Clearfield will now go to the state meet to be held this year at Alta High School in Salt Lake City. The number of wrestlers Scott is taking to state might be a record number for his school. Despite not winning the title, Clearfield had five region cham- pions of the 12 winning it weight classes. all were sophoThose more John Walter at 98, Merrill Johnson at 132, Todd Kopecky at 138, Scott Ferrin at 185 and Dennis Langford at heavyweight. WALTERS looked brilliant at 98 and dominated everyone he wrestled. His championship win came over a Box Elder opponent. As a sophomore Walters has lost only one match all year and will be considered a strong favorite going into this weeks state meet. Taking second at 105 was senior Gene Smith who made the finals but then lost to Smoot of Box Elder. We hoped that Gene could make it to the finals and he did," said Tennis, He had a tough win over the Roy kid in the semis but came out of that. ANDY Archuletta had a super tournament as he beat Brett White-side- s of Layton in the semis and waltzed into the finals where he lost to Lloyd of Box Elder. Hes been sick and injured through most of the season and to see him comeback and take second in region was great, said Tennis. Eve Flores lost a heartbreaker in the finals of the tournament, losing a on a penalty point for the championship. That was one match we really wanted because if we had of won it, we would have won the meet. But Eve did a super job getting where he was, said Tennis. Flores, a junior, has gained a lot of strength in the latter part of the season and should be an asset to the program for another year. AT 126 Scott Willard placed fourth after beginning that weight class seeded first. But he lost a tough one to the Bonneville opponent in the semis. Willard is a junior who had been beaten by the Laker wrestler in dual competione-point- er tion. Merrill Johnson 132 just tore em up according to Tennis. He looked as good as he has all year," said the Clearfield coach. Johnson, who hurt his ribs earlier in the season, won 15-- 2 in the semis and won again with a pin in the finals. ALSO LOOKING extremely tough in the tournament was Todd Kopecky. He won it all at 138 with an impressive showing from start to finish. He won in the finals with a pin. Mark Martinez started off shaky having to score five points in 10 seconds to win his opening match But he then whipped his We- 7-- 6. ber opponent who has always given him fits. In the finals Martinez started out well in the opening period but then dropped a 10-- 4 decision to Brent Higgs of Layton. Martinez, a junior, will be back again next season. AT 155 the Falcons didnt win a match as Tracy Candia competed there. At only 138 pounds it was difficult for Tracy to compete there but hell be back next season. At 167 Andy Clawson stepped in after a cancer operation and took fourth place. As a sophomore Tennis was extremely pleased with Andys effort. He was the fifth Clearfield has gone with this year. SCOTT Ferrins effort was possibly the brightest moment of the day. As a senior he pinned his way cr from start to finish and won the class. It was a super performance to help close out his final year of athletic competition at Clearfield. Scott pinned Larsen, who has given him fits all year. We had to look twice to make sure it was Scott out there. He was the only one to pin his way all the way through. I thought he could have 185-pou- got the outstanding wrestler award, said assistant coach Bart Thompson. Dennis Langford was also extremely strong at heavyweight as he pinned all his people with the exception of a first round bye. Langford has to be considered one of the favorites going into the state tournament. ANY OTHER year with five champs and four who take second would have won it going away, said Thompson, I believe Box Elders win came from their ability to pin their way through the consolation. The kids have nothing to be ashamed about. They wrestled well, concluded Thompson. Higgs Wins Only Crown For Layton LAYTON -- - - LAYTON On Friday, Feb. when Layton was humbled by Clearfield High at home, the man who sat in his chair deep in thought and probably left the gym last was 1 Douglas Moon. THERE HAD to be an answer to a comeback after that defeat and Moon was determined to fin d it. Well, the answer came and it happened to be something simchange as Moon ple as a line-u- p elected to sit sophomore Boyd Murray down and bring 6 junior Dusty Perry up. IT MAY have been a simple move on Moons part, but it became a major challenge for the Roy High Royals who couldn't handle it and thus fell to Layton 1 last Friday night in Roy. The inspired play of Perry which included 14 points and 1 rebounds helped Layton get back into the region championship race with a 2 mark and leaves them tied for second place with Clearfield. THIS WEEK Layton plays the league leader in Bonneville High at home. The last time these two got together, the Lakers escaped with win and it was a a narrow in which game Layton played well enough to win but didnt. in the We had a little shake-u- p line-u- p and I think itll help us, said Moon who thought the presence of his three big kids (Perry, Rex Brimhall, and Tom Dobbins) was the key to the win. WE HAD to do something even though Murray and Craig Dahl have been doing good things. We need some good people to come off the bench to spark us and I think those two along with McMilten can do that for us, said Moon. Layton ran into a geared up Roy team Friday, perhaps it being Roys finest effort of the league season. Ill give Roy a bunch of credit bea because they came to play. If we hadnt of done some things well, we could have very well of lost. OUR FREE throws shooting must improve. Fourteen of 27 shooting just isnt what we want. 6-- 80-7- 1 3-- Help Falcons Win Region By KEITH DUNCAN Lancers Tame Royals, 80-7- 1 Brent Higgs likes things to go in style and there wasn't a better way to bow out of three years of Region One w than to bow out in style by winning one more region chamrest-lin- g pionship. AND THATS exactly what he did last week at the Region One Wrestling Championships held at Box Elder High School as the Had (Darrell ) Martin hit his freethrows he could have scored 4 points, said Moon. But Martin did score 33 points in a spectacular effort even though things started off slow. He was awesome, said Moon. Martins quickness helped him get some early offense finger roll baskets down the middle that got plenty of ahhhs from the crowd. MARTIN, IF just two or three inches taller, would be completely unbelievable," said Moon. Martins future might be led into junior college play which is what he was is looking to at present. talking to Darrell the other day and 1 he said he would like to play JC ball and then try his hands two years later at the major college stuff," said Moon. COMING INTO the Bonneville game. Moon and his club appear as 1 145-pou- l i Mark Martinez in the finals of that weight division for his second consecutive region championship. Layton had two second place finishers at Box Elder. They included Larry Rynders at 167 and Dennis Weinze at 155. Rynders is a senior and Weinze is just a junior. I I I I SEE WHAT JACOB BENCH at 98 took third 5 place, Thayne Adams at 105 took fourth place, Brett Whitesides finished third at 112, Aaron Flint was third at 1 19 and Ron 126 Zim- C WILL BUY and finished fifth. Tony Butterfield was fifth at 132, Craig Fhclts was third at 138, and Rod Arrant took fourth in the heavyweight division. BUT THE momentum is coming back as the kids and 1 have accepted Troy wont be with us the rest of the year. Were slowly ad- justing. The adjustment got just a little closer to normal last Friday night as Clearfield picked up their second straight Region One vicwin at tory, a hard earned 64-6- 2 home. AGAIN THE Falcons were tough on the boards as they dominated the Bees on the boards, ending up with a 9 advantage. It was a excellent job rebounding by both Eric West and Greg Boykin who both go to the boards hard and anti- cipate well. Its the best rebound31-1- ing team trophy. WE POST a chart and keep a running total from the beginning to the end, said Hansen. Rebounding and defense doesnt get a lot of recognition except from the coaches who understand it." The Box game was nip and tuck through the entire first half with Box Elder holding a lead after one half. slim 30-2- 9 Elder-Clearfie- ld BUT CLEARFIELD began getting some momentum in the third and fourth, primarily because of some pressure defense. At the start of the final quarter the Falcons pulled off a 7 lead which Hansen called very crucial because neither team had been able to pull away from the other. But Box Elder did come back, 57-4- though Hansen said his team pretty much had control ot things during the final couple of minutes. THE LEADING scorer for Clearfield turned out to be junior guard. Darrell Hicks who came up with 15 points. West dropped in 12, Boykin 11, Mike Call 9 and Adams 8. Clearfield was hindered Friday by foul problems. Boykin actually picked up his 11 points and 10 rebounds in only eight minutes which is all the center played for the Falcons. "That's all he played, said Hansen, just one quarter. Greg had 3 fouls in the first 3 and a half minutes of the game." OTHERS IN foul trouble were West who fouled out with five minutes left. Hansen credited the bench for their efforts by coming in and filling the gaps. Folks like Lee Parry, Kenny Ashby and Eric Murray came in and spelled the starters in stalwart performances. Murray took over for Hicks when the latter sprained his ankle with six minutes left in the game and filled in well. CLEARFIELD can pretty well assure themselves of picking up a state tournament berth if they win this Friday at Roy. Roy on the other hand must have a victory or their playoff hopes will all but vanish. That's why we want to win this game, said Hansen, It's time to think tournament. Clearfield is hoping to shut down both Jorgenson and Newey which makes the Royals what they are.
