About 15.000 providers deliver home care assistance to some seven million individuals who require such services. As the population of people over the age of65 and th ecosts of providg health se: es, home health providers are ‘eatin ways to contain costs and deliver care more efficiently and effectively National health-care expenditures ballooned to an astonishing $900 billion in 1994. Homehealth care represents only 2.6 percent ofthis total amount. but it is the fastest growing segmentofthe market The number of home health-care agencies in the United States has increased more than 2,000 percent since 1986. Nearlyhalf of these are proprietary agencies, such as Total HomeCare, Inc. Homecare services are provided for people of all ages. More elderly people electing to live independent. non-institutionalized lives are taking advantage of home health care as their physical capabilities diminish = Younger adults who are disabled or recovering from acute illnesses are also choosingto be cared for at home Home health care has proven to be far less expensive for patients than prolonged or frequent hospitalizations, and patients tend to recover faster P; nts also prefer being cared for at home.
