He loved to listen. tohege gospel music and to an fiddler known as Uncle Whit Walker. Handy and his young friends played home-made instrume; nts made from combs or tin pans and milk pails. The blues music that he later wrote grew out ot the Negro folk music that he heard as a boy. By 1905, Handy had movedto Memphis, Tennessee, where he conducted his own band. He took the band on concert tours all over the United States. In 1918 Handy moved to New York City. Handy wrote many blues songs that are sti ili today. The most famous of Handy’s songs is “St. Louis Blues”. This came out in 1914 and opened a new era in popular music. The blues replaced the ey melodies or ragtime music with a slower and sadder kind of song. During the 1930's Handy slowly became blind. But this did not stop him from playing, composing, and publishing his music. He also wrote his autobiography “Father of the Blues” His eyesight improved for a time, but after 143 he was totally blind. Handy died in New York City on March 28, 1958.
