Watts | Cookin By JOE WATTS Writers Tip Broadcasters In 14-6 Basketball Game The American Cancer Society tried a new schemeat fund raising the other nightin the Salt Palace. The Utah Stars had agreed to contribute a portion of the gate receipts to the Cancer Society. That isn’t a new gimick— there arelots of charitable groups sharing in the Utah Stars’ gate receipts from timeto time. However, the CancerSociety didn’t wantto be content with the normal gate receipts, and so theytried to drum up extra interest in the game. Somehow they came up with the idea cf having a halftime game between the writers and broadcasters ofthe state. Stan Watts and Jack Gardner were to coach the two groups. Stan wanted to coach the broadcasters “so I can keeptrack ofthe turnovers by Paul James.” (It seems James has an obsession about turnovers while broadcasting BYU’s games.) Gardner didn’t wantto choose one team orthe other for fear of bad publicity from the otherside. Watts won the toss — he got the writers. Of course,it might be put the other way: the writers won the toss — they got Stan Watts, especially in light of the fact that it seems Jack Gardner can’t win on the read. Bob Welti, representing the broadcasters, and Harry Jones, representing the writers, officiated the game. Welti tossed up the opening jump ball, but instead of tossingit up he tossed it halfway down thefloor to Paul Jumes. James, being naive, brought the ball back for a re-jump. That was the last time the broadcasters got the ball past center court. ‘Thebroadcasters scored six points on two three point plays, one by James, a swisher, and one by Bill Harrington. They couldn't score anything but threepointers because they never gotthe ball inside the three point zone. Wily Jack Gardner had six menstart the gamefor the broadcasters, but it didn’t take Stan Watts longto insert a man to balance the sides, Soon the benches were empty and there were about 22 menon thefloor. This didn’t make for good ball handling, and so Harrington picked up the ball and started running down the court. Dan Pattison,of the writers, applied a crushing tackle and the loud speaker announced,‘Harrington is stopped short of the goal line by Pattison.” The writers won 14-6, which caused Bill Marcroft to comment, ‘They play just like they write — with a bludgeon.” Jack Gardner was not available for comment after the game, but knowing his aversion to the ABA, he probably blamed the loss on the red, white, and blue basketball. The broadcasters got the best of the officiating. It seems Harry Jones, the ref representing the writers, doesn’t like to “whistle at the boys,” while most of Weiti’s ~alls were “partly cloudy.” Tt would have been easy to pull a hidden ball trick in that game.If one of the players had stuck the ball under his shirt you wouldn’t have been able to tell who had it. Ped all look like they’'ve got a basketbell under their wd, to perfection, In the first half the game was tied eight times with Wyoming holding a 42-38 intermission lead. The Cougars had a 10-7 lead and a 32-31 edge, but for was the second conference loss for the Rams. 100 Yard BATTLING ON THE BOARDS are Brad ‘Smith (15) of Wyoming, Craig Jorgenson (44) and Jay Bunker (55) of BYU.
