Dr. J. Kenneth Davies, a 45- year-old professor of economics at BYU,is concerned about unemployment, First, as a pro- fessor there for 17 years, his specialty has been labor. F or a second reason, he was appointed recently to be chairman of the Rocky Mountain Regional Manpower Advisory Committee, which advises the U.S. Depart- meni of Labor. And third, the State of Utah’s unemployed now outnumber the 27,000 persons whoconstitute the BYU community. The last monthly estimate by Utah’s Unemployment Security Office shows that 29,400 persons —or6.7 per cent of Utah’s work force—were unemployed in December. Moreover, fewer than half of these persons wereeligible under state law to receive unemployment compensation. $56 a Week And for those who did receive compensation, the size of their tamilies or financial responsibilities was irrelevant.
