Show Lake Powell To Outdoor % Roundup’ Get More Trout By CASEY BOWN $0 Per Cent of Deer Harvest Taken on the First Weekend An average 60 percent of the annual deer harvestis taken during the opening weekend of the season when moct gunrers areafield and the animals are on the move. The other 40 percent cometo the hunters staying out longer or going back to try again later. For those goin? back again we wouldfirst list six hunting units NOT to be visited since they have a short seasonof five days closing Oct. 21. These are the Vernon, Tintic, Vernal, North and South Book Cliffs and the Henry Mountains. Otherwise, all other of the: } herd management vnits are open through 300,900 pounds of fish -- three times that of the one other dr in 1971, in part due Federal hatchery in Utah, to the greatly expanded capacity located at Springville. “Because of an acute shortage of Federal hatcheries following the inaugural operation this of rainbow trout eggs in the West year of the Jones Hole Fish due to a virus disease that Hatchery near Vernal, Sen. destroyed the eggs produced by Waliace F. Bennett, R-Utah, the major Fedeval supplier, the Federal government did not reported today. The Utahn was a chief sponsor plant trout in its principal Utsh of legislation more than a recipient — Lake Powell — decade ago that authorized during 1970,” Sen. Bennett said. “However, the chief of the construction of the Jones Hole facility. It has a capacity or Division of Fish Hatcheries of the Fish and Wildlife Service assures me that the planting scheduled for next year will more than make up for the loss in 1970,” he added. Sen. Bennett continued, ‘In 1969, 270,000 trout were planted by the Division of Fish HatPHOENIX, Ariz. (UPI) — cheries in Lake Powell. The Marv Edwards posted thefirst Federal government plans to shutout f the young Western stock about 750,000 in Lake Hockey League season and Powell in 197i, most of which gave the Phoenix Roadrunners will be planted in April and WASHINGTON — Federal fish planting in Utah will increase Oct. 27, with 16 of these open to 16 or more days of hunting. These 16 extended seasons cover herd units from the Cache on the north to the San Juan Mountain herds down south. Longestofall, a 30day season, covers the Dolores Triangle portion of the LaSal herd unit. Your scribbler strongly advises the hunter going on these extended seasonunits to know his boundaries and ayoid trouble. The sure way to do this is to get out your deer hunting proclamation, choose the herd unit or units you plan to hunt, and then read and be certain of the boundary descriptions listed for each unit. The longer seasons are scheduled as a management measure for units where a greater harvestis needed than would be taken during the regular 11-day hunt. Shortage of winter forage and damage to agriculturai lands are major reasons why this management measureis set by the Utah Board of Big Game Control. Only portions of someof the extended season units are open in some cases where treatment to reduce the managementproblems does not cover the whole unit — whichis all the more reason why the hunter should read and knowhis boundaries. The Dolores hunting area is only a smal! part of the total LaSal Mountain herd unit. Yet,it is open for 30 days through Nov. 15, and can provide somefine hunting IF weather conditions cause migrating deer to moveinto the problem area of the hunt. Advice here is to makethe trip during the last week of this season when many animals normally will have moved into the area. It might be well to note that these extended season hunts are open only to holders of the regularlicense and tag. The f & g folks frown on the idea of one or more huntersgoingafield with old ‘‘Joe” to help him get his name. Just rememberthat once you’vefilled your tag your huntis over, unless you wish to leave the gun behind and enjoy playing dog to push the cover for Joe. Manyofthe bigger bucks are taken during the longer hunts as the old boys begin the rut and do foolish things they would not ever do until mating urge comes along. So get your proclamation, choose your extended hunting area, and have fun. Lots of time yet to go and the premium is relaxed on elbow room.
