The two specialize in turning junk into beautiful home decor. Grover and Elliott will teach seminars on how and where to find inexpensive items that will enhance your home. Elliott has been a decorative painter for more than 20 years. As a young newlywed, Elliott said she simply did not have enough money to buy furniture and would go to thrift stores and garage sales to find other people’s junk. After arriving home, she would get out her paints and put together combinations that made the junk furniture look rich and elegant. Elliott, a professional gallery artist, used basic techniques that apply to oil painting on canvas and altered them for furniture design. “When first started painting furniture, I used a lot oftrial and error,” said Elliott. “I realized that some of my mistakes had an artistic appeal. I started turning these mistakes into oldworld furniture design.” This new passion became the inspiration for herfirst book — “Junk Chic.” The book was well-received and launched herinto a second book entitled, “French Country Junk Chic,” which has been very successful in the USA as well as international markets. Spring 2004 will mark the release of Elliott’s third book “Painted Flea Market Furniture.” In addition to her books, Elliott has also been featured on local and national television programs including, “It’s the Christopher Lowell Show” and as a regular contributor on ABC’s “Good Things Utah.” Elliott will teach three different seminars. The first seminar is “Door Architecture.” By using doors and screens painted in various finishes, these pieces give any room a beautiful accent. Next will be “Torn Paper Furniture.” Paper Visitors to the Deseret Morning News Fall Home Improvement, Remodeling and Deco rating Show will get an extra treat this year. Tuff Shed will create two by-10 playhouses to be part of a silent auction with proceeds going to benefit the Christmas Box House. The silent auction design and works with noted interior designer Karen Butera. She has been featured on numerous local and national television programs and is a regular contributor on Katheryn Elliott Sti W. Grover is a wonderful tool that when used with paint and the right techniques will create a dramatic effect on simple furniture. The last seminaris “Cheat- ing Your Way to Hand Painted Furniture.” This class will focus on achieving the look of expensive old-world furniture by using materials such as chalk, colored pencils and various paints. Recently, she decorated Celine Dion’s home in Las Vegas and dressing room at Caesar’s Palace. Grover enjoys the fast-paced life of being an interior designer, but she also cherishes her quiet moments relaxing in her Northern Utah home on her family’s farm. “Interior design is a matter of personaltaste and what works foryourlifestyle,” said Grover. “Just because someone spends a lot of money does not mean that the design is beautiful to all people. I think everyone needsto look at his or her own lifestyle and what works for them. That is where personal design begins.” Grover’s background began in fashion design and quickly transferred into interior design. “Many ofthe principles in fashion design and interior design are the same. My backgroundin fashion has helped expand my talents into interior design,” said Grover.
