Show TRADE ID AND flin NANCE LETTER reviewing present conditions throughout the united states and the intermountain regon region we tire lire reminded that all progress all growth is relative the asparagus plant or the mushroom appear to outstrip the redwood tree but which becomes tile the giant all great movements must proceed slowly and with caution there must bo be pauses in our commercial life wo are are a volatile people rising to the heights of extravagance in our belief in the future prosperity of our land lana or kinling into despondency as we view with alarm the obstacles which appear to block our way the rate decision the uncertainty as to procuring a i reciprocity treaty reaty with canada threatened tariff revision the trouble in mexico all mere incidents in themselves seem to have halted temporarily the progress of our great industrial concerns yet greater questions are being settled quietly every day seeds are springing to life in the sol soil new enterprises are forming for future growth education Is advancing we ve are moving onward we scarcely anticipate that business in general will advance at a great rate during the succeeding eighteen months our growth will rather resemble that of the glant giant redwood natural healthy wholesome and lasting rig the principal factor in evolution is time caution and conservation are arc not pessimism they are simply the brakes wisely furnished to retard undue acceleration the supreme court has said that the standard oil trust must be dissolved within the succeeding six months we do not think that the decision will have the effect of increasing or diminishing the wealth of the country by the measure of one dollar as the various companies composing the trust will undoubtedly continue their operations and from now on in compliance with the laws of the nation the opinion rendered is undoubtedly an able one and its immediate effect upon the market is to give it strength and couyancy bou yancy other giant combinations are by this decision shown that operations aich have the effect of putting an unreasonable restraint upon trade will not hereafter be tolerated locally we are expanding every day it is impossible for us to do otherwise prices may rise or tall fall business may slacken or accelerate but our steady onward and upward progress less can not be stopped regardless of what we ve as individuals may think say or do we are a new country with all of the latent elements of greatness geology teaches that the hidden treasures of our mountains and the depth or of the soil in our vallies rallies were ages in forming it will require long jong decades for us its to subject these to our material uses we must produce more abundantly of our raw materials before we greatly advance our manufacturing industries and before we come coms into our own we must certainly become a united people building although building activity Is not what it was two years ago salt lake is fully keeping commercial club Clu band and utah development league his arcady attracted widespread attention to this bbate that kind of effort is educational and is well worth our careful v consideration 1 oura tin i a ed our money manufacturers the manufacturing industries of utah show a healthy of increase during the past live five years which indicates that we haie reason to be proud of our state and its the gingham bingham and garfield Garti eld railway just being completed gives utah a now new scenic line for passenger traffic between salt lake and gingham bingham and shortens the ore haul from mine to 10 smelter by nine and three quarter miles this road is a marvel of engineering gin gi skill already she has attracted the attention of railroad building experts throughout the entire world it has 20 miles of main line and 10 miles of siding its four tunnels have a length of feet and the three steel bridges have a total length of 2000 feet there are two wooden bridges ialo fackt and feet respectively contracts have been lot let and work begun for the completion of the double tracking of the oregon short line from farmington cannington Fann ington to ogden and on oil the southern lake route has begun the construction conati notion of a new line of road from moaga moapa on its main line between salt lake and los angeles south a distance of 22 miles the aloaha melon country to st thomas nevada this will permit the marketing of the products of this great section of the country in salt lake to avoid future washouts wa shouts along its main line this road has about completed the construction of a high line for a distance of 84 miles between barclay and 11 lompa nevada through caliente the roadbed Is transferred flom the bed of the old wash and the new line of tracks is carried high up along the sides of the canyon this improvement insures an all open line to los angeles the year through good roads of all tl the c forward ahe movements begun for t the development of utah there is no one more teal leal important or more far reaching in its effects than that for better wagon loads A study of ilie the growth of this section ot of the country will reveal that population and improvements ments follow the roads just as they follow the rivers when the country was a wilderness of what use to the farmer to produce a big crop yield it if lie be cannot quickly and easily haul it to market it if we but make good roads thero there will follow a rapid increase of the percentage of lands under tinder cultivation almost any state in the union would consider itself blessed it if it had the materials at band for road construction which utah has in millions of tons the right to use convict labor as granted by the last session of the state legislature means that we can now construct splendid highways at a nominal cost it if we of the intermountain states will but make the most of the vast resources within our borders foster and build up our established industries add new ones as needed and exemplify the redwood in its grow growth till the future of ten or twenty years will discount by far any picture that our optimists of today might paint THE
