Show TO THE GROWERS the following Is the report of me 3 am M white ot of the utah fruit exchange on conditions as he found them upon his recent visit throughout the middle and eastern states after a careful study of the fruit situation in utah as well as prospective market conditions in the east the writer takes pleasure in making the following report we find georgia and texas the two largest peach producing sections la in the united states all but cleal cleaned led out with the frost the output ot of these giant peach states last year was about 00 cars which when iben rushed onto the market within a space of about 2 weeks at a very low price has a strong tendency towards the demoralization of prices last year we experiences experienced this to our sorrow especially when coupled with the very poor system of distribution the fact that these states are frozen out alone would not assure us of high prices this year but will certainly have some bearing on t the h in matter tt ri from good reliable sources w we also so learn that the northwestern peach crop is practically gone together with some of the colorado districts this being the fact the outlook tor for the utah peaches this year is good I 1 am not an alarmist neither do I 1 think we will get a dollar per box for our peaches but I 1 do think after careful investigation throughout all the markets west of the mississippi river kiver that vie e will get a very good price tor for our peaches this year unless some thing happens that we are not anticipating As to me apple situation conditions are not so flattering there are prospects of a bumper crop everywhere reports from every apple producing section of the country point towards an overproduction over production and the dealers already are beginning to exhibit no bitle little anxiety concerning their proper distribution so as to realize the best possible results we expect however to line up with the very best dealers in thie the game and believe by so doin doing it we vre are strict in maintaining a good pack we nill w ill get eiery ei ery dollar that is coming to us 4 I 1 ara am proud to report my findings with reference to the peach reputation utah has established within the last three years in III the east previous to that time utah wai was looked upon as a joke by all dealers and I 1 think justly dealers everywhere are tree free to admit that we had the goods but that it was impossible to got get them put up right they think utah has gone through a sort ot of a sprouting process th that atvill will rebound to her everlasting credit providing we ma maintain intrain the pack notwithstanding we paid pretty well tor for our experience at the time the name of john moore of 0 grand junction must go down on record as the name 0 of the man who did more for getting a reputation for or utah fruit than any other one man the fruit without the pack is like salt without savor this reputation having once been established it will be much easier tor for us to realize better r returns for our products however we must be persistent in keeping up the pack and not put too much reliance on the reputation we have already made it will be absolutely necessary for every grower to guard that reputation as he would his money for one seasons careless packing world teardown the good work of three or four years it will be necessary necessary for us to employ the very best men we ican can get to thoroughly inspect fruit at all packing houses and platforms now I 1 think the one thing that m most ost vitally concerns us at the present time is the necessity of staying together I 1 dont think there is is a s sane ane man in the state who has given a few minutes thought to the matter who wilt will question the advisability as well as the necessity of our state organization As the pioneers of 1847 were driven to the rocky mountains for or refuge so were the fruit growers of the state driven to closer organization year after year we have tolled toiled hard bard and long growing picking and preparing our fruit for the market only to meet with disappointment when returns came in ill we have ex 1 1 l with local dealers we have bave tied lp li i best marketing aroi n the liast east and from the west we have patiently sul submitted bitted to the most rig rigid ld discipline in taking care of our orchards and preparing our f ruit fruit for market we have been the hav bewer er of woo wood and carrier of water v ater all these years rs allowing the native gray matter to lie he dormant and putting a premium on imported brains gentlemen how T Jf rl long ling shall we remain in this deep slumber Is it not time to wake up and show to the world that there is room and natural environment sn in utah for to a brain hatchery as well as in lie sister states stales I 1 think there Is a scripture that says in substance reever the carcass lies there shall the be found the wolves boves are already invading our flocks and trying to scatter them buyers are now wanting to contract tor for our peaches peache S which ot of course they have a perfect right to do but with present indications it would look very foolish tor for us to tic up with any but our own organization i it was not until we had been fleeced repeatedly that we organized an exchange and that at no little expense now it would be the height of tolly folly to cut our own throats by selling to outside dealers furthermore we ve feel that the exchange will be able to do jilt is as well if not better by alie grower as anyone else the dealers are naw now very anxious to tie up your peaches but what about the apples ask them when you are approached on the matter it if they will make you as good a price proportionally tor for apples as they will tor for peaches and it will not even take the son soil of a prophet to predict their answer I 1 the dealer will tell you that utah will ship more peaches this year than she ever did before and to the suckers and the suckers only this ment will have weight but the tact fact that utah may ship more peaches than she bhe did last year will not make any difference whatever to the general market as our ratio is so small compared with other fruit producing sections I 1 do not want to burden tho the reader with unnecessary gulf guit but do hope you will use good judgment and an help bell to build up tip our own exchange because there abc ai 0 other years to follow and through experience we ve have learned that the early buyers bayers only show up tip when something good is in ili sight and as a rulo rule the they are arc in a better position to know iii market arket condit conditions loiA than the grower respectfully J 11 WHITE manager utah fruit exchange |
