THE ASSOCIATED PRESS * The Green Bay Packers shored up their banged-u backfield Tuesday with the acquisition of ae = running back Darick Holmes from the Buffalo iis. The Packers sent an undisclosed 1999 draft choice to the Bills for the 6-foot, 226-pound sation outof Portland State who has both thesize and speed to play fullback and halfback. Holmes rushed for 1,383 yards in 385 attempts for a 3.6-yard average and 10 touchdowns in his three- plus seasons with the Bills. He also caught 54 passes for 431 yards, an 8-yard average and one touchdown. The Packers have the 29th-ranked rushing attack in the NFL with Pro Bowl selection Dorsey Levens out until December with a broken leg and severely sprained ankle. a JETS Thanks for the win. Now take a seat. This is how it goes for Vinny Testaverde, a quarterback who has suffered the indignity of being shown the door by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Baltimore Ravens. Evenafter he does his job, he mightlose it. Ten days ago, susbtituting for the injured Glenn Foley, Testaverdeled the Jets to their first win of the season. He threw for four touchdowns in a 44-6 romp against the Indianapolis Colts. But come Sunday against the Dolphins, Testa- verde could find himself back on the bench, Coach Bill Parcells wants Foley to return to the lineup, if his bruised ribs allow. Parcells said it will be a gametime decision, but he gave the impression he wants Foley back sooner than later. 0 BRONCOS Everybody wants to play the Philadelphia Eagles these days, and notjust because they're 0-4 and averaging nine points a game. Remarkably, all three were deemed expendable by the Eagles. So they naturally wanta piece of the jes, preferably management. They'd be happy with a win, but they'd prefera wl x “I wanted to stay (in Philadelphia),” said Roman- owski, an outside linebacker who leads the Broncos with four sacks, “and (coach) Ray Rhodes said, “We're going to get you signed.’ When myagenttold the general managerthat Denver had madean offer, he laughed at rt agent.” The Broncos lured Romanowski away from the Eagles in February 1996 with a five-year deal worth $9 million.
