Orem, County Renew Talks For Fire Pact Good to very good UTAH STATE HEALTH Forecast Little change Monday DEPARTMENT - The Utah County Commission has returned to negotiations with Orem over a fire contract for an unincorporated area west of the city PROVO 70s (AP) The county had asked Provo to take the contract after negotiations with Orem broke down. But Provo officials asked that the county give Orem a final chance Orem Mayor James Mangum told the commission last week the $3,500 the county has offered to Orem to provide fire protection for the area around U S Steels Geneva Works is not enough To back up Genevas fire fighting equipment, the city would need some sophisticated equipment which it ordinarily wouldnt need, he said Experimental , Home Built Aircraft Tribune Staff Writer It is an old although unconfirmed story that friends told Wilbur and Orville Wright, Itll never get off the ground And although flying has advanced considerably since the days of the Kitty Hawk flight, it is the job of men like Allen K. Griggs of Salt Lake City to check out or experimental, home-builaircraft to assure they can fly and safely. Many of the aircraft Mr Griggs has to inspect and test are built with kits The kits are parts of the aircraft which are put together much as model aircraft are, but are full sized and, it is hoped, will t, kit-bui- lt pre-form- fly Other aircraft are designed and built by a private individual and are listed as for the pilot's own amateur or home-buirecreation and education. lt Mr Griggs, whose title is manufacturers program manager, Flight Standards District Office, Federal Aviation Administration, never goes up himself in the planes, balloons or other aircraft to test them after seeing sketches and pictures of some of them, it's doubtful if anyone would blame him. They range from simple wood and aluminum frame skeletons powered by And snowmobile motors to sleek jet powered craft And they include balloons, helicopters, girocopters and others There are some and biplanes monoplanes, push- - and pull type propeller driven craft. Mr Griggs said there are between 150 aircraft in and 200 active, amateur-buil- t operation m the Utah area at present, and a number are either under construction or on the drawing board It isnt that he wont fly in the uncertified airc .aft, Mr. Griggs noted, it is that he cant until the plane or according to law other type of craft has been certified for air worthiness, controllability and flyability He said that if an airciaft doesn't look good, he will warn the owner andor pilot not to test it until it is improved If they insist, Mr. Griggs said, we will restrict them to an area where they can do no harm to anyone else during the testing We cant protect them from themselves other than to give them our opinion, he said And sometimes that doesn't do much good d He recalls one and built craft which on the first try couldnt get off the ground, but did veer off the runway for about a thousand feet before cracking up home-designe- After being rebuilt, second time the pilot tried a St. That time the craft soared off the ground several hundred feet, then dived to the ground, killing the pilot. But most, happily, are well constructed by people who have studied aerodynamics thoroughly Many amateur aircraft builders are members of flying clubs, the Experimental Aircraft Association or other such groups Most of the craft have been extensively tested before they are ever offered for sale and after being carefully checked by Mr Gnggs and others like him, have an excellent chance of being as airworthy as a completely commercially manufactured plane 12 , 1980 POWELL Dora W Glen wood Sevier County Dec 13 1900 SCHROEDER Salt Anne K Lake City Dec 13 1980 E Glen Smith Burrows - MURRAY Glen Smith Bur rows 72 died Dec 13 1980 after a long il.ness Born Sept 1908 Cotton wood to Wilford ' C and Treiste Smith Burrows Married Evelyn McOmie Dec 31, 928 in Salt Laxe City Was a i union steward Atomic Cnemi- - ? cal and Oil Union Retired truck driver At lanhc Richfield Oil Co Member Meadow Brook Golf Course Association Member, LDS Church Survivors widow, Murray, sons Wilford Glen James M, Jerry David, all Salt Lake City, Marks Hospital Calvin Joseph Sandy, brothers and 12 s grandchildren, Ralph, Mrs Doyle (Donna) Yates, and Mrs LaMar (Betty) Withers, all Sandy, Mrs Dorothy Holt, Mrs Jacob (Virginia) BurTed Mrs Edward ton $r Ashby (Evva) Spencer Mrs Jude (iva) Wissier, Richard all Mur ray, Robert, Salt Lake City Funeral services Tuesday noon at the Murray 8th Ward, 156 E 4600 South Friends may call at Jenkins boffe Mortuary, 4760 S State Monday 8 P m and at the churrh one hour prior to services Interment, Murray City Cemetery Family suggests contributions to Utah Cancer Society Mr and Mrs Wayne Southwick 7214 S 2075 West West Jordan daughter Mr and Mrs David Schnoor, 1121 E 4420 South, daughter Mr and Mrs Lorin Paul, 1366 McCormick Way, daughter Mr and Mrs James Kirton, 3886 Brixton Road, son Mr and Mrs Joseph Stilmovich, 2404 W 2625 South, West Jordan, daughter University Hospital Mr and Mrs Ping Chi Chan, East, son and Mrs Richard Hill, 331 500 East, daughter Mr and Mrs David Hart, 1311 Univeristy Village, daughter 1500 S Mr Nora Smith Bauman Nora Smith Bauman, 82, our beloved mother and grandmother, 14 Dec died Valley West Hospital 1980 Mr and Mrs Kyong Choi Kim, West, Magna, son 2972 S 9050 Lakeview Hospital mT J Mr and Mrs Berne Pulsipher, S Sorrento, Woods Cross, daughter Mr and Mrs Douglas Osborn, 90 W 1300 South, Bountiful, son Mr and Mrs KeithCook,1174N 350 West, Centerville daughter f 2075 S.L.
