Rick, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mather of 5051 S. 2675 West, Roy, just completed a full season of freshman football with the College of Eastern Utah in Price. That is the miracle. For a kid who suffered injury and sickness through most of his high school career and seldom being able to see action, the mental going can be tough. The first miracle happened with CEU giving rebirth to a football program that hadnt been around for 17 years. The second is players like Rick, who despite the hardships in high school, make the team and before the season is out earn a starting role. CEUs season came to a close last Saturday in Rexburg but Rick and the rest of the returning lode forward to another campaign with plenty of winter weightlifting ahead. The 0 played hurt most of his football but still was able to see action with at High, Roy days the junior varsity team and some varsity action. He graduated in 1978 and made the decision to play, with a scholarship at CEU this past season. Rick, who is also a talented javelin thrower, has thrived in the weight room and carries a pretty good bulk in the upper body. He plans to throw the javelin this spring with the CEU track team. Rick presently has two brothers who attend Roy Junior, Darin and Tony, both are avid wrestlers. Ricks two older brothers, Jeff and John were also active in sports. The College of Eastern Utah finished their season last Saturday. The Golden Eagles only victory of the season came with a 3 win over Ricks. Roy High football player, assistant by Bliss Fullmer a wrestling clinic, last weekend at Sand Ridge Junior High School, Dennis Preece, wrestling coach at Cyprus High School went over the fundamentals of wrestling for sixty-fiv- e athletes from Roy and Bonneville High Schools and from Sand Ridge. Mr. Preece coached at Uintah High School from 1965 to 1975, and then moved to Cyprus. His teams at Uintah won the state championship eight times in the ten year span. Coach Preece places dedication ahead of everything else in wrestling. A man must be willing to pay the price," he said. If he doesnt leave practice tired and smarter than when he came, he has wasted his time and mine. Many of Preeces former wrestlers have gone into the college ranks, and his program at Cyprus is starting to catch on.
