The Weber County library must stay abreast of new developments in the information field or risk becoming and ineffectual to the public it serves. As the advantages of computer processing far outweigh any disadvantages, you, the public, will have new worlds opened up when our library Joins the computer processing out-date- d mnen,tZ . age. I tho Futuro Perhaps we will even see erasable , reusable books. Networking will connect us to every information source in the country, resulting in immediate access to the knowledge we desire. Because libraries are the focal points of our communities, we in the library profession look forward to the challenges of the future. Information On Lino The Weber County Library will soon become part of the Online Revolution. The installation of a computer terminal at the main library will enable patrons to locate specific information accordin to their needs. An online information system is simple to visualize. Seated at a computer terminal, the librarian is jn direct contact with large computer bases via a telephone. The librarian uses a set of programs to enable the patron the computer data bases. When the patron is satisfied that the instructions to the computer are resulting in the retrieval of information that is relevant and useful, the librarian commands the computer to print out the references immediately (online) at the library terminal or later (offline) at the computer center which then mails the information to the patron. Almost all of us are served by a simple online information system every time we reserve an airline seat or make a major credit card purchase. Online information service is the great equalizer . . . the tool that brings access to as many millions of documents into the medium size public library as it brings into the Library of Congress. Online information services are here to stay. They do however, impose fundamental and changes in order to assure maximum benefit to the library and its staff, and more importantly, to the patrons the library |
