Show ( 2C Lakeside Clearfield Recovers Review North, Wednesday, Dec, 28, 1983 To Beat the Darts k KENT SOMERS Review Sports Editor With the temperatures dipping below the teens, Utah high school basketball players were and doing the only prudent sane thing staying at home enjoying the holiday. Thanks to the moratorium from Dec. 23 to Dec. 29 on all practices and games, high school basketball players and coaches were able to take time off from picks, screens, zone offenses, man defenses and scouting re ports and concentrate on food, gifts and more food. If you saw CLEARFIELD Clearfields two games last week, you might have had a difficult time believing that the same team played both games. The two performances even had Clearfield Coach Craig Hansen wondering. In the 5 loss to Ogden last .Tuesday, Hansen said the Falcons were outrebounded and our shooting percentage was not good. It was combinatiion of those two things. But that quickly changed the following night against Davis at Farmington Junior High. Clearfield played its best basketball game of the season, leading Davis the entire game and winning, 60-3- 79-6- 5. Its funny what one night can do, Hansen said. One night we played the poorest game of the season and the next night we play the best. The Falcons used the strength of post man John Grotzky early in the game to hurt Davis inside. Grotzky played his best game of the year, said Hansen, scoring 25 points and did a good job reHe is rebounding bounding. better. He got three of four offensive rebounds and put them in the basket, he worked hard and defense and worked hard to get himslef free, but its not only what he did, but what the team did. Clearfield used a press for much of Wednesdays game and also played a good pressure man defense. I thought we played real good man de full-cou- rt HAVE A SEAT. It took them out of their offense." The Falcons will conclude schedule on the their road against Woods Cross this Friday at 7:30 p.m. In terms of numbers, ROY the Royals had a light schedule last week, playing only one game on Tuesday. But in terms of competition, the Royals had a tough schedule, meeting tall and talented Viewmont in Bountiful. But Ted Smiths Royals, despite missing numerous free throws in the fourth quarter, beat the Vikings, The win, however, snapped e losing streak Roys and Coach Ted Smith did see some improvement, I thought we did some things better. We played much better as a team. The Royals now have a 4 record in preseason, but Smith said part of those losses can be attributed to playing tough teams. The other reason was poor shooting, Smith said. Weve been getting good shots and just shooting poorly, he said. With our lack of size its tough for us to battle people inside. We need to take care of the ball and shoot well. Roy concludes its preseason schedule on Friday evening against Provo at 7:30 p.m. LAYTON The Lancers played only once last week, losing to Highland Although Layton placed four players in double figures it wasnt enough for the Lancers to avoid their sixth straight loss for a record. But. Laytons James Beauregard said the players have not been getting down on themselves. We are trying to organize ourselves, he said. Darrell Martin led the Lancers ' in scoring with 19 points, and Tom Kidd scored 15 points after returning from an ankle injury. Layton faces another tough game this week when they travel to Brighton on Friday evening. Still, Davis was still in the ball game with four minutes left. But the Jaguars had little trouble hitting in the last minute and put the game away. Last Wednesdays game against ' Clearfield was different from the West Jordan game because the Darts trailed for much of the game. Davis made a brief run at the Falcons in the second half but.
