And Julianna Milburn, who has a thick British accent, is re tired and lives in a condominium across from the J.A. Taylor Elementary School. Both spend their Monday afternoons teaching German to a group of some 40 fourth, fifth and sixth graders at the school. Neither Koenig nor Ms. have ever taught school before. Both are volunteers. And both are teaching a subject generally not taught in elementary school. Ms. Milburn responded to a notice on the bulletin board at The Meadows condominium complex near the school for foster grandmothers. She quickly became much more than that. She not only teaches an hour of German each week, but also tutors behaviorally handicapped students for several hours each Mil-bu- m At Center ances- - In try. Koenig said many of the students in the class have parents who went on church missions to German speaking countries. Others have relatives who have visited Germany, Koenig said. He said he believes its much easier for elementary school students to learn a language now than when theyre older. It comes naturally to them at this age, Koenig said. As a fourth grader I took Spanish, Koenig recalls.
