Show try 6B Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1983 Chamber- Director Hopes - ' Co-o- p A Spirit Helps Economy By SHARON STEELE . Review Correspondent HILL AFB Utah works because Utahns work together! .Was a slogan often used to describe the Beehive state when early spring flooding focused national attention on the cooperative spirit pervasive throughout clean-u- p operations. It may be indicative of Utahs economic salvation in the years to come, according to Bradley B. Bertock, director of economic development for the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Bertoch, who is a graduate of Northwesterns Graduate School of Managment, addressed the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce in a luncheon held Aug. 10, at the HAFB Officers Club. A realtor in the Salt Lake area since 1979, Bertoch has a degree in economics from the University of Utah, and has served as marketing research analyst for Walker Bank and Trust, account executive with a Denver based advertising agency, and acting director of marketing for the Denver Regional Transportation District. Currently overseeing Salt Lake Chamber efforts to attract business to Utah, particularly along the Wasatch Front, Bertoch says Utah is the second fastest growing state in the union, because everyones singing the same song." Utahns are upholding a tradition of cooperation that dates back to 902, when more than 100 business leaders met in an effort to stop the segmentation or rivalry that had Mormons buying from Mormons on Main and First South, and patronizing on Main and Third South. That kind of foresight and planning in the economic sector of Utah has carried on, Bertoch explaines, resulting in a government responsive to business. Since that time, the state "has experienced many economic 1 non-Mormo- ns ns peaks and valleys. As recently as the late Sixties, unemployment was 'h to 2 points above the national average, because we were exporting our highly educated labor force. Later in the Seventies, concerted effort to bring industry to the state was quite successful. National Beckon Dickinson, and Rockwell were among large companies that chose to invest heavily in Utahs work force. In addition, several big companies like Thiokol expanded, Bertoch said. By 1978, Utah had reached the magical number." Producing 23,000 educated workers a year, the state "created 39,000 new jobs, more than enough to achieve lower than average unemployment. The year 1979 also saw good growth with 23,000 new jobs. However, new concerns over the environmental and social impacts of a potential growth explosion were soon laid to rest. MX went away, IPP was postponed and then cut in half, he said.
