Last week the officers petitioned Bountiful city officials, asking be stopped somewhere and even reversed. If offcials allow Woods Cross to put a WX on the mountain, other high schools will also want to desecrate the mountainside. On the other hand, if officals deny the request without forcing Bountiful and Viewmont to re fortheir help. Their desire is understandable, especially since Bountiful and Viewmonta High already have their letters displayed on the mountain. But three wrongs dont make a right. Instead of allowing Woods Cross to place the letters on the mountain, officals should require that the other two schools remove theirs and clean up the view from the valley. School pride is essential and enjoyable, but destroying the aesthetic beauty of an entire mountain with white letters is little more than legal vandalism. Since school spirit is important, alternatives to identifying schools with painted letters should be explored. Probably the best example of mixing school pride with common sense is the L on the mountain behind Layton High. During the day, the L is conveniently invisable. There is no whitewashed letter to diminish the view of the Wasatch Range. But at night, whenever the Lancers have a game, the L can be lighted. Its a pleasant sight. Unfortunately, the two largest universities in the state have also decided to use the mountains as a large billboard, setting a bad example for the high schools to follow.
