Show Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, July 27, 1983 Family Raises Special Puppy To Serve as Guide for Blind By SHELLY KANCITIS HOY Bambi is a gangly Salt Lake Fairgrounds from golden retriever puppy who San Rafael. Club members sometimes falls asleep with her waited anxiously as each child's nose resting in a favorite tennis name was called. First they shoe. She loves to eat bugs, lick gave us the dogs name and peoples faces and play with her training kit. Then they brought security blanket, a well chewed us our puppy, explained sock. Bambis priorities will change dramatically when she reaches 18 months of age. Instead of chasing bugs, she will make decisions that can have life or death consequences for her owner. Bambi is no ordinary puppy. She is being raised to become a guide dog for the blind. Born in San Rafael, Calif., where Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. has its campus, Bambi had to pass intelligence and sociality tests, and be in top physical condition before she could begin the long process culminating in her assignment to a blind owner. Guide Dogs for the Blind, a non-prof- was organization, it founded in San Rafael in 1942 by blinded World War II veterans who discovered there were no guide dog training facilities on the West Coast. Since its inception, more than 400 people have received guide dogs. The puppy training program began when it was discovered that dogs raised in private homes surpassed the performance of kennel raised puppies during training. The organiza- tion then decided to find families who would take puppies and rear them until they were 18 places as possible, May when a van filled with 22 wiggly puppies arrived at the Ravlaw Corraipondant said Bambi has been to a variety of locations including church, the dentist, stores and the airport. I say lets go and Bambi always assumes shes invited too." Puppies in training wear bright green and white jackets so people realize they are not ordinary dogs. I always ask permission before I take Bambi 'into a public building, said Schock. Unfazed by her travels, Bambi usually ends up going to sleep. After 15 months with the Schocks, Bambi will either fly or be driven back to San Rafael for five to six months of inten-siv- e Schock. Schock. Like any new family member, Bambi has baby pictures, a baby book and a collection of her baby teeth. I thought the person who gets Bambi might enjoy knowing about her past, said Schock, whose eyes fill with teats when she discusses the caring relationship that develops between a guide dog and its blind owner. Like other puppy trainers, the Schocks had to apply and be interviewed before they were accepted into the program. It takes a lot of work to train a puppy. The dogs first year is especially important because it leaves impressions on them that last the rest of their lives, said Schock. Participating children must be between 9 and 18 years old. They are required to follow training rules established by the San Rafael school. Along with meetings, they must weekly booklet complete a seven-pag- e detailing information about the dogs habits, temperament and experiences. Its much harder to be blind than it is for us to give up our dog, even though well all end up crying when Bambi leaves. The Schocks and other club members receive invitations to their dogs graduation cere- monies. We can go to San Rafael at the end of Bambis training and present her to her new owner, said Schock. Some day one of our dogs might even end up belonging to a blind person living in our own community.
