Show 7A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, July 20, 1983 See Doctor j Allergies Can Be Treated By CHERYL ARCHIBALD Raviaw Correspondent BOUNTIFUL Hayfever sufferers should see their doctor and give him a history of their symptoms and then have tests done to determine how to best be treated. There are new medicines and new ways of treating the ailment, according to the ear, nose and throat specialists who spoke at Lakeview Hospitals Health and Wellness Conference last week. About 75 people listened to and asked questions of Dr. Bernard A. Heiny and Dr. David J. at the conference, which was about deal- Har-brec- , ; ' . ; I ; ; ; , 1 ; 1 ; ! ; 1 ! ; 1 ht ing with allergic hayfever. Harbrecht defined allergies as stimulation by antigens, such as pollen or ragweed, causing antibodies to react and protect the body from the antigen. Fifteen years ago, IGE, which is an antibody, was identified, and it is now known that interac- tion between IGE and antigens produces allergy causing chemicals. The chemicals cause the sneezing, coughing, and swelling of mucous membranes in hayfever and asthma. It is important for a doctor to find out which season of the year a patient has hayfever. If he suffers most in the spring, the reaction is prob-- . ably caused by pollens in the air from certain trees. In the summer, grasses are the cause and in the fall, weeds usually provide the allergens. If a person has hayfever year round, he should suspect things in the house such as pets, molds, spores or house dust. A history of when the symptoms most often occur will give the doctor some basis for testing, which is the next step in the diagnosis. In skin tests, extracts of antigens are dropped on scratches of skin and monitored for reactions such as hives. In another skin test, antigens are injected into the skin. Both tests are accurate and valid if done properly, according to Harbrecht. However, Harbrecht said there are problems with the tests. In very sensitive people, hives, rashes and swelling in the throat can occur. People who have a history of asthma or severe allergic reactions have the tests spread out over a number of days or weeks. The third method of testing for allergies is the RAST Test. A blood sample is taken, and the level of IGE is measured. The test has been used for 10 years and, said Harbrecht, in the next few years it will be the way to go. There are several reasons why, he explained. First, it is more convenient. There need be only one blood sample drawn, instead of many injections or scratches. Secondly, the cost has come down and is now only slightly more than skin tests. It is easier on kids, than the repeated Injections, and the accuracy of the test is improving all the time. He said the test can be given later, after allergies have changed or become more severe from repeated exposure to allergens. Once an allergen has been found, treatment is recommended for the individual case. Harbrecht admitted that diagnosis and treatment of allergies is a controversial issue among physicians. One treatment that is effective and used often is the routine injection of a small amount of antigen to desensitize the patient to the allergen. We have ways of finding what allergens were dealing with, and the treatment is becoming more and more scientific, said Harbrecht. He said that drops under the tongue are being used a little, but there is some question about the absorption. Avoidance of the allergen is always a good treatment, if it is possible. Heiny explained that there are 80 to 90 million people a year with allergy problems. He said that an allergy can start out mild and get worse, or change when the person moves. It can take a rest, and then get worse again. All of us have the mechanism to become allergic its all how the body copes. Ears are affected more by allergies than most people realize, and Heiny explained that 70 percent of the children seen each year by pediatricians are treated for ear problems, with 30 percent of those being related to allergy problems. Otitis media, as the most familiar childhood ear problem is called, is a swelling and reddening of the inner ear. Fluid builds up and after a while it causes softening of the ear drum and can even eat away at the bone. Symptoms are pain, and the childs pulling at the ear, and drainage. in some cases If the disease is not treated there is little or no pain the childs hearing can be impaired. The treatment for chronic otitis media is to reduce the swelling with decongestants, treat the allergy with antihistamines and insert tubes to drain off the excess fluids. Adults often suffer from sinusitus because of allergies and according to Heiny, 60 percent of sinusitis cases are caused by allergy. The sinuses fill with fluid so the patient cant breath. Many times nasal turbinates swell and polyps sometimes develop inside the nose, obstructing breathing. Treatment for these conditions are antihistamines, decongestants and sprays. Dont use over the counter sprays, said Heiny, because there re a lot of nose spray addicts around from them. Vehicle Emissions Test Slated CENTERVILLE A free vehicle emissions test will be given by the Davis County Health Department July 2 in the parking lot of the Ernst Home. Center located at 158 E. Pages Lane inthe Bountiful Shopping Center. The test determines the level of exhaust pollu 21-2- tion emitted by the automobile carand whether a tune-uburetor adjustment or mechanical work is needed. The department says cars and trucks that are improperly tuned and in need, of maintenance produce large quantities of air pollution. Periodic testing p, days are held at various sites each month as an effort to fight the rising levels of air pollution in the county. starts Friday, 9:30 a.m. be available sizes quantities. ..not many limited in all may each grouping. ..colors and styles limited to stock on hand, so shop early for best selection! in our Layton store womens sportswear buys for girls NOW NOW 2.98 3.98 3.98 5.98 6.98 85 JUNIOR TANK TOPS 48 EXERCISE TOPS OR SHORTS 20 JUNIOR SHORTS 30 MISSES CAMISOLE TOPS 20 LARGE SIZE TOPS 73 JUNIOR CASUAL PANTS 25 MISSES BLOUSES 52 MISSES' PANTS OR JEANS 85 JUNIOR TOPS 90 JUNIOR SWIMSUITS 60 SWIMSUIT COVERUPS 55 MISSES SWIMSUITS 45 CASUAL JACKETS 15 MISSES BLAZERS 6.98 6.98 7.98 7.98 9.98-15.9- 8 9.98-22.9- 8 11.98 15.98 NOW 18 JUNIOR DRESSES 4 JUNIOR DRESSES 12 MISSES DRESSES 1 3 HALF-SIZ- E JACKET DRESSES DRESSES 14 LARGE-SIZ- E lingerie, loungewear NOW womens accessories 48 48 101 BELTS 48 98 98 98 8 2.98 2.98 3.98 3.98 4.98 44 HANDBAGS 51 CANVAS SHOES 44 TUBE TOPS 39 VINYL HANDBAGS NOW 32 WOMENS MESH SHOES 2.98 38 GIRLS LEATHER SANDALS 4.98 32 WOMENS CASUAL MESH SHOES ... 9.98 120 WOMENS FLAT SANDALS 9.98 1 0.98 49 GIRLS SUEDE SHOES 1 7.98 25 WOMENS CANDIE'S1 HI HEEL 1 8 WOMENS CASUAL SHOES 1 9.98 22 MENS HUSH PUPPIES SHOES .... 19.98 48 28 TIGHTS 27 SCARVES 49 SOCKS 37 PICTURE FRAMES 33 PANTYHOSE 67 LEG WARMERS NOW shoes for the family NOW 106 BARRETTES NOW TOPS LITTLE BOYS' SHORTS BIG BOYS TANK 1.98 13 WALLETS 1.98 38 SHORT SLEEVE DRESS SHIRTS 3.98 132 TIES 3.98 28 JOGGING PANTS 3.98 36 PLAID SPORT SHIRTS 5.98 21 HOODED ACTIVE TOPS 7.98 107 SWEATERS 7.98 21 5 SHORT SLEEVE SPORT SHIRTS ... 7.98 50 SWIMWEAR 7.98 20 ROBES 9.98 21 CARDIGAN SWEATERS 9.98 24 SHAVE TOTE BAGS 11.98 1 4 LT.
