Show 4C lakeside Review South, Wednesday, May 4, 1 Garden Bark Versatile 'Tool' 983 One of the most versatile landscaping tools available to todays home gardener is bark. With the wide variety of sizes, color and textures of bark available at most nurseries, garden centers, hardware and large chain stores, the homeowner can produce professional land- scaping effects within the bounds of reasonable cost and effort. Decorative bark, according to the National Bark Producers Association grade standards, usually means bark over inch in particle size. However, there is considerable gradation in uniformity, color and texture, adding to barks one-quart- er landscape versatility. the larger chunks, over of an inch in diameter, are generally referred to as nuggets. The smaller chunks three-quarte- rs into ches in size) are called mininuggets. e Most decorative bark is processed from evergreen tree bark producing a ground cover that is and atpractical, (one-quart- three-quart- er er high-grad- rustic-loo- king g long-lastin- tractive. And there is ample opportunity to use bark creatively in both large and small areas. Todays typical townhouse with its tiny patch of ground space in front and back of the property is ideal for creative use of bark. Bark nuggets applied to there areas, enhance the beauty and utility of the space while reducing maintenance to near zero. Lawn mowing and the need for the mower itself can be eliminated and new found storage space can be adapted for other uses. Properly applied bark needs only a light topping each year to offset decomposition. In larger landscaped areas homes, outside of e bark works well around the driveway, pit, pool, patio, and play areas. Tedious clipping and edging of grass is elminiated by applying bark around trees, in permanent flower beds and around walkways. Mowing grass is as as a poweasy as er mower will now do all the cutting right up to the bark edge. Bark mulch can be applied at any time of the year. Initial applications of bark should measure four to six inches in depth, although variations on this general rule should be made to adapt to the site and its y single-famil- bar-bequ- e, Test Garden Soil Regularly to Get Return on Fertilizer Investment High interest rates and research findings point up the importance of regular soil sampling and testing. SWEEPING branches of the birch tree give it USU soil scientists say phosphorus and potassium are soil nutrients that will stay in the soil until used by the crop. They dont leach out with the water. Putting more on than the current crop needs is like putting money in the bank, but without it drawing interest. Find out if you need to fertilize first, advises Reuel E. Lamborn, director, Utah State University soils and crop testing laboratory. Theres no use buying more and putting it on just for insurance. Interest cost on money is too high for that. Utah farmers have long recognized the value of applying phosphorus, especially on their alfalfa. Studies indicate returns of from $20 to $50 per acre in added hay production are achieved from applying $5 worth of phosphate to soil deficient in a graceful appeal. Fragile Appearance Birch Tree Needs Special Care clump, bronze, and river birch. The river birch is native to Utah. Birches have shallow, fibrous, hair roots, and if one is planted too deep and kept too wet, the roots will be injured, said Smith. It must be planted at the same level as it was in the nursery, and the hole must be three times as big as the root system. Any young birch tree has to be protected, said Smith. The bark is thin and must be wrapp- ; ed with tree wrap the first season. The spittle bug is one of the tormentors of the birch tree. Spittles exude a frothy, substance for their young. Malathion, according to Smith, is the best . planting. Varieties of birches in this area are the white, willow, II; y ;y deterrant. A hole is the , the bark of the birch immediately, because the borers kill rapidly, eating the inner bark so no sap can flow inside the tree. To protect birch trees from these pests, a dormant spray can be applied before any leaves appear. After the leaves appear, Malathion can be sprayed over the tree. An application of Lindane to the trunk in June will guard against the borers. Just be sure not to spray the leaves with Lindane, says Smith. Because it will burn ! Why? Recent USU experiments on Utah soils that tested low in potassium and were irrigated with low potassium water also revealed economic value in adding this nutrient. As the land is cropped, Lamborn expects to find more soils becoming deficient in potassium. This deficiency is seen now more with sandy soils and land irrigated from mountain streams. He advises that you regularly have your soil tested to determine what the fertilizer needs are. In that way greatest immediate benefit can be obtained from dollars spent for fertilizer. Lamborn cautions those wanting their soil tested to first obtain instructions from the county extension office on taking a proper soil sample. Following those instructions will help assure that the sample will be representative of all the soil in the field. Too many people, he said, just grab a handful or shovelful of soil, put it in a plastic bag and take or send it in. It may only be representative of one spot or of the surface two inches of soil where manure was put on last year. . If you want maximum value from your soil testing, you must try to take the smples according to the instructions provided by the county agent and heed recommendations from the soils laboratory, Lamborn added. youd have to buy three other models to get the same outstanding combination that Ariens offers on their 21" d of mowers: Large Capacity Rear Bag - Easy on, easy off!
